A cracked oil pan is usually from hitting a bump or object. If it didn't effect the piston rods, it's of no consequence. 76K is not very much on modern cars. Have the compression checked; look at the exhaust to see if it is burning oil, or if it looks like steam, has a head gasket leak. It may be a good idea to have a mechanic give it a safety check.Is it worth buying a used car that previously had a cracked oil pan? Its been fixed but what about later on?
Consumer Reports indicates the 2002 Beetle has above average reliability. For some reason the 2001 and 2003 did not fare as well. For a 7 year old car, that's not a lot of miles. Good luck with your new car. Report Abuse
Could be a bit of a lucky dip.
If the oil pan cracked and lost most of its oil it could have definately done some damage to the engine internals.
Some engine damage isnt always evident but may lead to accelerated engine wear in the future.
Definately get it inspected by a reputable mechanic, its such a small price to pay, otherwise let it go, theres heaps of cars out there you can afford to be picky.
Cracked oil pan? I have never heard of that happening to an oil pan on any vehicle I am aware of but I am sure that might happen if the vehicle has a cast aluminum oil pan. I wouldn't bet a ham sandwich that it won't happen again if it has a cast aluminum pan but if the vehicle had a cast aluminum oil pan and they replaced it with a stock stamped steel oil pan then I wouldn't worry about it ever cracking.
*Edit note: If the vehicle does have a cast aluminum pan then it might be wise to have a trusted mechanic check to see if the mounting bolts are evenly torqued so that the pan is not unevenly stressed and have him see if maybe it is possible to mount a steel skid plate under the pan to protect it from impact with anything you might run over, ice chunks and such or anything you might bottom out on.
A cracked pan is not a big deal. I usually replace them but I have welded them when a replacement pan couldn't be found. What could be a problem is the condition of the engine if it was ran without oil after the pan was ';cracked';. Usually what happens is someone drives over something that punctures the pan, then they only realize theres a problem when the oil light comes on. Depends how long it went without oil before it was shut down. You might want to have a mechanic look at it before you buy it if it sounds strange in any way. Look up mobile mechanics in your phone book or on craigslist. I charge $75 for a local call out to inspect a car on site. Most all mobile mechanics will do it for you for around the same price.

an oil pan is easily replaced.
