How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?

Our oil pan got stripped when we got an oil change and so we got a heli-coil put in but it's still leaking a bit. What's the best way to seal it? MIghty puddy, silicon...? How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?
depending on how bad its leaking you may have to try and use another gasket on the plug and if that doesn't work rtv sealant may work on it for a while, but i think you,ll wind up changing it,they do make a larger plug that will thread its self and stop them from leaking, but you have to be careful when using those ,you get one shot at it when your doing it and if it doesn't work you usually have to get another oil pan, good luck with it.How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?
your welcome, good luck with it ,those can be really hard to repair. Report Abuse

Back to your original issue. Who ever changed the oil and stripped out the drain plug should have comprehensive insurance. I never in a thousand years would allow someone to install a heli-coil in the oil pan when it was still on the car. All it takes is one chip of steel to ruin an oil pump or get pumped through the oil system.

All you can do now is purchase a new factory drain plug. The threads do not seal the oil, its the tapered gasket under the hex flange. Some oil pan drain plugs have sealed O rings. Go to some local auto parts store or the dealer of your car and find the best drain plug with a gasket sealer at the top.
A liquid gasket, or a new drain plug.
