I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?

im trying to do an oil change on my old school benz and, i stripped the nut that drains the oil. i tried those wrenches that they have at sears to remove stripped nuts, but they only stripped it more. any suggestions? please help, time is of the essence!I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?
you can get a kit called a bolt extracter kit ive got a set never had any probsI stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?
vicegrips and a screwdriver prying out as you turn with the vicegrips and after you get it out go to the parts store and get a self tapping drain plug.
slap a set of vice grips on it dude. that should work
Best solution, buy new oil pan and oil pan gasket or try this:

get a dremmel or such and use the metel cutting wheel.

Carefully cut a slot across the nut, then use a flat head screw driver to take out he nut.
Vicegrips. But if the bolt is stripped so badly that those damaged-bolt-removers can't get it off, I wouldn't put a lot of faith in vicegrips either. I think you're going to be looking at replacing the entire oil pan. You'll need to undo all the bolts that hold it to the engine and pull it off. With it being full of oil still, the job will be messy as hell. You'll need a new oil pan gasket as well when you put the new pan on.
visegrips
try vice grips like everyone else has said.If that doesn't work try using drilling a little hole in it a ways and then use an easy out. And of course then you will have to get a new drain plug, but you will get it out.
If there's anything left to grip get your hands on a small 8'; Ridgid Brand pipe wrench or large Vice Grip pliers. If your lucky any auto parts store will have a replacement oil pan drain plug. A plug from your Benz dealer would be better. When you install the new plug bare in mind that the hex nowadays is always a metric size.

If all else fails center punch the pan bolt and drill a large hole in it and get your hands on the largest screw extractor you can and reverse it out. Thank the last SOB that over tightened your oil pan drain bolt.
Vise grips are a life saver. Just be sure to lock them down as tight as you can possibly get them. Then I try to pull down on them as I twist the bolt. Hopefully it will catch and you can get it out. Now the problem will be getting it back in. With the threads stripped, you will have damage on the oil pan too.

Do you get another oil pan, or try drilling it out and using a tap and increasing the bolt to a larger size? I don't think that a heli-coil will work in this case. good luck.
get a pair of vise grip locking pliers and lock them on the bolt as tight as you can and then smack the bottom of them with a hammer just make sure you are loosing and not tightening

  • Where is the oil pan on a Chrysler LHS?

I have a Chrysler LHS, and it has been under warranty since it was bought, so we were always able to get the oil changed for free. Now, the warranty is over, and we have to change the oil ourselves. I bough the oil and filter, and put it up on our ramps, and I could not find the oil pan or filter anywhere under the car. Anybody have any ideas?Where is the oil pan on a Chrysler LHS?
It's bolted to the bottom of the engine block. If you know that little about cars, I would suggest have an oil change shop or repair shop do the work.Where is the oil pan on a Chrysler LHS?
Visit you local auto parts store and purchase Haynes manual #25025 for your LHS, about $20.00, full of good info, photos and diagrams. Most auto parts stores and Walmarts will recycle your used oil for free, call or ask around.

How much is the average cost of repairing a car with a leaking oil pan gasket?

my car is a 2001 chevy cavalier. the oil leak was noticed sunday. i'm just trying to get an idea about the cost so i don't get ripped off. thanks to all that help me and happy halloween!!!!!How much is the average cost of repairing a car with a leaking oil pan gasket?
A NEW GASKET IS ABOUT $30. AND A SHOP WILL PROBABLY CHARGE 1 HOUR TO REPLACE IT. NO MORE THEN $150.00How much is the average cost of repairing a car with a leaking oil pan gasket?
depends on what is in the way of the oil pan coming off.

some cars have to have the engine pulled out part way to change the oil pan.
About one hour labor, a gasket and an oil change. No more than $200.
If someone recently changed that gasket I would take it back as they have over tightened the bolts. If that is not the case the cost should be under 50 bucks.

Anybody know and easy way to fix a craked oil pan?

all my oil leaked out, the whole isnt huge although gets bigger due to pressure. i have liquid weld stuff i havent tryed that yet. any other suggestions? please let me know asap.Anybody know and easy way to fix a craked oil pan?
If your pan is aluminum it is best to pull it and take it into a welding shop that can do aluminum welding (I believe it is called HELI-ARC done with a special rod and helium gas ) .If your pan is steel it should be taken off and have the crack BRAZE welded shut .If you have to do it on the vehicle that is possible too. another option strip the repair area surface very well down to a clean metal surface and use some fiberglass mat with resin and hardener over the crack and smooth it out .I have done this to very rusted pans that are not easily replaced and it works well .Anybody know and easy way to fix a craked oil pan?
how about you tell us make and model

the pan has to come off for repair or replacement liquid weld is ok for a temporary repair but for permanent needs welding or a new pan
Don't mess with liquid weld... despite the marketing spiel, it's still just a gummy liquid... and motor oil is both very hot, and under pressure... not a good combination for a hack job like liquid weld.

Unless you have real welding equipment, I'd just call a junkyard and see if they can find you a replacement oil pan. Probably less than $50, and you'll have the peace of mind that you won't have a blowout in the middle of nowhere that will easily cost you more than $50 in towing alone.
The oil will actually break down the liquid weld and then you'll have the same problem all over again.

I would suck it up and buy a used oil pan from a scrap yard, I wouldn't advise messing around with anything else
As a matter of fact I do. Buy a new one.

How hard is it to change a oil pan + oil pump on a 93 f150?

very easy just make sure you have a new oil pan gasket to replace the old one with and scrape off the old one really wellHow hard is it to change a oil pan + oil pump on a 93 f150?
sometimes you can get it off without doing much ... but if you have to you might have to jack th e motor up some remove a motor mounts the pan has like 20 screws the oil pump has a couple not really that bad on any truck and the ford would be one of the good one to be trying it on have fun you can do it

Tapping an oil pan for a 3g mitsubishi eclipse?

im installing a turbo on my 3g eclipse, and i cant find any answers to where the oil pan needs to be tapped. can somone help me?Tapping an oil pan for a 3g mitsubishi eclipse?
Check with an aftermarket place( like Checker) for a oil filter adapter. It installs befor the oil filter and has two likes for say an oil cooler. You can tap into that line and feed oil to your turbo. Then back to the oil filter .

Sorry I have seen these installed for an oil cooler and have also seen then for a turbo, but don't know where these people got it from other then an aftermarket shop.

    Hope this helps.

drain your oil from pan if yours dont have cross member under it remove the 10mm bolts that hold it to the engine take a small screw driver in the corner of pan prying down slightly pan will pop loose remove and replace gasket if theres a cross member take bolts out of engine mounts take a jack under the pan with a board between the pan and jack to keep from hurting the pan jack it up as far as it will go with out breaking something put a block of wood or a brick or what ever you have between the engine and motor mount housing let your jack down then you can do like i told you with out a cross member good luckHelp replacing oil pan gasket on 94 camaro?
i change several of rear main seals. what you do is after you removed the pan, take off the main bearing cap off, take a thin screwdriver and push the top part of the seal out from the top of the crank then take the part out of the cap. get a new seal(the rubber seal is the best). install the upper seal in above the crank with the seal lip facing the front of the engine and do the same in the cap. take some high silicone sealer (the blue type) and put a dab at both ends of the seal on the cap, put the cap back on the crank and torque the bolts to specs. to get the oil pan off you might have to jack up under the engine so it will clear the pump.if your just changing the seal you don,t have to remove the crank.the timing seal, all you do is take a screwdriver and pry the seal out and tap the new seal in. 1 more thing, on the crank seal and the timing seal, oil the seals up before changing them so you won,t have a dry start up.

Is it possible that a dent in the oil pan can hit against the crankshaft?

2000 Dodge Intrepid. Ran over something was told my knock sounds like my crankshaft hitting my oilpan. Is it possible that a dent in the oil pan can hit against the crankshaft?
It very well could be.. Oil pans are built thin on purpose so that the oil in the pan can cool easier. I knew of a guy with a neon that had his crank knocking the pan.. Not so good for the internal components.. Crankshafts are precisely balanced. It would likely be a counterweight hitting the pan. You don't want the weight hitting the pan and causing vibrations. You need to take the pan off and hit the dent out or get another one. It's an easy driveway job as long as there isn't anything else in the way that you need to remove to get the pan off.Is it possible that a dent in the oil pan can hit against the crankshaft?
most definately! brother in law did it to his

annoying aint it? keep a check on the oil

a hole may open up in the pan and cause ya to lose oil. that aint a good thang

I just thought of a funny thning:

    you might be a redneck

if you have a skid plate

    on a dodge intrepid!
Yes it is. if you have a swallow oil pan it can do that.
happens frequently. some times, just letting the engine idle, the crank shaft ballance lobs, will pound the dent back out
it can if the dent deep enough.also it could ruin the pick up screen in the oil pump.

Was told to drop trans oil pan, I should find larger filter. Is that true?

03 f350 6L dually w/ auto transmission. Have changed transmission oil %26amp; filter. Was told to drop trans oil pan, I should find larger filter. Is that true?
There is a filter inside the pan however I believe the repair manual says it is not a service item, regular service is the outside filter you've changed. The inside filter is renewed upon overhaul. Was told to drop trans oil pan, I should find larger filter. Is that true?
ford recommonds never changing the transmission filter.. but yes you would see it after you take of the transmission pan.

also your question makes no sense....you were told to drop the pan and change the filter.... but then you said have changed the oil and filter???
    Larger trans filter, not likely.

Larger transmission cooler is a possibility.

How to clean the stainless pots and pans from burnt food and oil?

boil some water with lots of salt in this pot, the burnt food will come off easily. How to clean the stainless pots and pans from burnt food and oil?
I have always used a brillo or steel wool pad. If it is really burnt in there, you may want to also use a heavy duty degreaser, but open a window first, or you might get a little loopy.
Just had to do this last night--and it's the best solution I have found for years. Use hot, soapy water; a good detergent like Dawn to break up the grease. Soak a few minutes %26amp; then use a Chore Boy golden fleece scouring cloth and elbow grease! The beauty of the golden fleece is that it is a specilly treated terry cloth that can be washed in your washing machine %26amp; it does not rust as the metal scrubbers do.
soak the pan in baking soda it will lift the food and oil off the pan.
You should check the label of this product, but if I'm not mistaken, Bartender's Friend would be

good to use in cleaning stainless. It is sold in all good grocery stores.
I have always had good luck with sos pads
Soak them in vinegar. It loosens the stuff and it's easier to scrub off.

There are also commercial cleaners and stuff but if you don't have any this will work. Soak for 10 minutes or so.
I have heard that soaking over night - fill it with hot water and a bounce (dryer) sheet.

    How do I remove a oil pan from a 1968 Impala (327ci)?

We got the oil pan bolts removed, but can't get it out of place. Any suggestions or tips? How do I remove a oil pan from a 1968 Impala (327ci)?
To elaberate on what was said. IF you do not have a crossmember or steering arm in the way, then you are more than likely catching on the Crankshaft (it comes down about 3 inches into the oil pan) - or you are catching on the oil pump pickup tube (it comes down almost 5 inchs into the oil pan)

You MUST lift the motor high enough that the pan will come DOWN to clear these items - WARNING if you move the pickup tube on the oil pump / or bend it / you will NOT get oil when you re-start the car - that pickup tube sets just above the bottom of the oil pan - about 1/2 inches from the bottom.

WARNING - if you do not watch what you are doing you will break the distributor on the fire wall, or break the exhaust from bending them, or break the transmission from the lift.

a couple of pic's below showing how far the crank and oil pickup sticks out from the blockHow do I remove a oil pan from a 1968 Impala (327ci)?
You do not indicate why you can't get the oil pan off, but there are typically one of two problems and I will address both.

The first is that there is an obstruction in the way, often a steering arm or the like. If that is the case, that too must be removed.

The other is that it simply will not budge, as if it is glued on, which in a manner of speaking it often is. Often when an oil pan is installed either a sealant has been used, or it has remained on so long that the gasket has more or less fused between the engine surface and the lip of the pan.

In either event, there are two methods commonly used to freeing it. You can use a large rubber mallet to strike it from various angles (being careful not to hit is so hard that you bend it) or you can put a piece of 2x4 or heavy plywood on the side to spread out the stress and cushion it a bit as you use a hand held sledge hammer (somewhat less vigorously) for the same purpose. Your blows should be directed at the low hanging corners of the pan, as there it is not only structurally the most sound, but being farthest from the sealing seam it will exert the most leverage.

You can also try to work a putty knife into the seam and work your way around once you get a gap started. I would avoid using a chisel for this purpose as, if you are not careful you could gouge a place into the sealing surface and thereafter you will not get a good seal.

  • Water in oil pan after removing heads?

I took 2 motors apart this week. One is a 460 ford motor and the other is a 92 toyota 1.6 motor. I want to know if its possible to get water in the oil pan just by removing the heads and intake manifold. If so, is it a lot of water or a small amount?Water in oil pan after removing heads?
after you crack the head bolts loose and start to move the heads on the block you disturb the head gasket, allowing any fluids to find a lower level. coolant and oil will settle together, so yes your situation could me caused by this.Water in oil pan after removing heads?
yes, it is possible and usually does happen, to get water in the oil when removing heads. when you remove the head you open up the coolant passages and if you didn't drain the block before removing the heads any water/coolant will spill out and drain into the oil passages. Whenever I have an engine apart, after reassembly I drain the oil and put in fresh. After starting and running the engine, I get it up to temp to make sure the t-stat opens, check for leaks, set timing if applicable and any other adjustments, then I'll drain the oil and change the filter before sending down the road.
Yes - and it's contaminated with antifreeze which the rod, main and cam bearing surfaces are not compatible.

Drain the oil %26amp; replace the filter and be safe - it's cheap enough insurance and you know what they say:

You never seem to have the time to do the job properly, but you always can find the time to do it over.

And it's usually more than a few drops - the coolant that empties from the intake and heads seeps past the pistons and the oil galley and ports into the crankcase.
It's hard to avoid it totally. How much depends in large part on whether or not you opened the block drain before you took it apart. Besides the heads, the Intake on the V8 has a coolant passage too.

If it's a lot, I'd change the oil before you start it. And then either way, change it a little while after you start it, once it's had a chance to warm up a little bit, but before you go out and stomp on it.
Yes it's possible, and it all depends all the amount. Just go through, and do a mental checklist of everything you done to make sure you did everything right. Change your oil, if you done everything right, and start er up and run it for alittle bit, then check your oil.
Yes. The oil passages and water passages are right next to eachother. We are onle talking about a few drops. It is always a good idea to change the oil a hundred miles after a job like this anyway to flush any metal/water out.

How can you remove a 2000 Formula LS1 oil pan?

Does anyone know if the oil pan bolts are the only thing holding it to the engineHow can you remove a 2000 Formula LS1 oil pan?
You have to lower the engine cradle (front sub frame) for The oil pan to clear. Their are some specialized tools for supporting the engine because it will come down with the cradle when you try to lower so it isn't really a job I would recommend for the backyard mechanic. How can you remove a 2000 Formula LS1 oil pan?

I am assuming the oil pan doesn't get hot therefore the glue will not melt, or does it?The oil pan of my car is leaking. Does any body know if I can stop the leak with a glue gun?
try tightening the pan bolts down some to see if the leak stops and if not you will have to replace the gasket under the pan, glue wont work. The oil pan of my car is leaking. Does any body know if I can stop the leak with a glue gun?
HAHHA!, Serious? Let me put it to you this way, any thing basically touching the engine will get hot, just a matter how hot, But being that the ';Oil'; pan holds the substance that reduces friction (which creates heat) The Oil and pan are one of a couple of things that are the hottest things on a engine, so it's safe to say household glue will not hold a oil leak.

    What you need

    1. Replace the pan or gasket.

    2. depending on the leak, there is some items that can seal or patch a oil leak, (not recommend for a long term solution) However these products are designed for ';High Temperatures'; Ex. JB Weld has been know to patch a few cracks and leaks in engine components such as oil pans.

However based on your question I recommend you Replace the cracked pan or gasket that is causing the leak.

    Good Luck
First, check all the nuts are correctly tightened up,if that does,nt work you will have to drain the engine oil remove the sump pan and old gasket, clean and check the gasket surfaces and fit a new gasket. It would be cheaper to have it done along with a service.Which would mean you have your engine oil and filter changed at the same time and all liquid levels checked, then its only off the road once.
not a good idea. If you don't want to change the gasket you might be abel to lossen a few of the bolts surrounding the oil pan and fill it with gasket sealer. It might fix it but there is always a chance it will make it worse.
no no no have to get new pan gasket try tightening the bolt but not to tight it may slow it or stop it all it also works the same with auto trans pan . and yes the oil pan get very hot it will melt
Only way to stop the oil pan leak is to install a new gasket. If the leaking area is perfectly clean and dry (not likely), a glue gun MIGHT help slow down the leak, but don't bet on it.
not a glue gun ! if you have a small hole then use jb weld. if it,s leaking around the gasket then change it. the oil pan gets hotter then you think.
the oil pan will get to hot for glue.I would drain the oil then ruffn it up with sand paper, and apply auto body filler,,like bondo. It must be free of oil,It worked for me
no you can not fix it with a glue gun
glue wont stick to oil. but they make a external epoxy that works good.
    No

How difficult and expensive is it to replace a 1998 Sunfire oil pan gasket?

its about $80 for a gasket kit(u cant buy the oil pan gasket seperat) and its easy to change just use a haynes manualHow difficult and expensive is it to replace a 1998 Sunfire oil pan gasket?
if you have the Dual Overhead Cam engine the labor guide calls for approximately 6 labor hours, if you do not have the DOHC engine the labor guide book calls for approximately 3.5 labor hours. Last I checked the national average labor rate per industry sources is $80 per hour, so depending on where you live and take your vehicle for service it may cost anywhere from $280 to $480 for labor.

I stripped my oil pan screw, what should I do?

I don't have the money or time to order a new one. I changed my oil myself and didn't think it was a big deal, because it went back on tight enough. Now I have no more oil in my motor, and there is a slow leak at the screw. What should I do, I don't want to glue it or anything, because I will need to take it off again next time.I stripped my oil pan screw, what should I do?
Tap and Die set. Be careful of metal shavings falling in the oil pan. So be gentle when re-threading the hole.I stripped my oil pan screw, what should I do?
    You got few choices.

You can tap it with bigger thread and install over size bolt.

You can take out the whole oil pan, take it to machine shop and have them fix the thread. They usually drill the whole thing out and install a thread repair insert.

Or you can purchase a new oil pan and just replace.

Just to buy time, you can cover the bolt thread with liquid gasket and install the existing bolt.
They make a few repair screws that aren't that expensive. See your auto parts place for one. They require that you tap in a new screw hole, though. I had this problem once. It's a fairly easy and relatively inexpensive fix, and you don't have to get a new pan. Check it out, they should have the size of tap and screw you need, you'll only need to take in your old screw to get the right size.
are you sure its stripped or do you just need to replace the washer?

ive never done it, but maybe you could re tap the threads?
When a bad mechanic did that to my car, they glued it in and told me to check the oil frequently because it would leak, and then the next time I needed an oil change I had to buy a new oil pan.
    Re-tap the pan.

You can do this with a Tap%26amp;Die set or you can take it to most any garage that does oil changes. It's a fairly simple procedure... though you may need to apply a neoprene washer from now on to prevent a drip or two. No big deal.
Use high temp oil resistant sealant available at any auto shop.

It'll hold back the leak, but come off when you need it to.
go with john p answer. check napa/autozone/advance or one of the other parts stores less than 20 bucks
Go to your local auto parts jobber. They usually carry an oversize drain plug that is self tapping just for that reason. No need to drill and tap a new hole. Should be less than $10
You mean the drain plug.... make sure you have the washer on the screw.... if it is damaged get a new washer..... it is really hard to strip a drain plug......
Teflon tape will seal it right up. just don't allow any tape to hang lose into the oil pan.
If it is just the drain plug that is stripped, you can get a new one for just a couple of bucks. If the threads inside the pan are stripped, you will need to tap them out, maybe to a larger size and use a new plug of the appropriate size.

You should buy a tap at a tool store for the same size and one size larger. Try the smaller one first and see if it can clean up the threads. If your new plug of the same size won't screw in properly, use the larger tap and larger pan plug.
I don't know about now but at one time the local parts dealers called what I all ways referred to as a ';Fitz all'; It was a oil pan plug that was slightly larger than the original and was self tapping. As an after thought, was the gasket on the plug when you put it back ?

take a picture of the oil pan and valve covers b-4 removing any bolts(cell phone camera is handy here)making notes (mental or written)of bolt sizes ,lengths etc.place them in separate boxes .clean the mating surfaces of old gasket, dirt etc. glue the new gaskets to their respective parts(hi-temp RTV works ok or permatex) replace the parts and DO NOT overtighten the bolts, run them up ';snug'; or finger tight then working from the middle outwards torque them down according to mfg specs 1/8th of a turn at a time for each bolt in 'criss-cross fashion until all are tight usually 2-3 rounds of sequence tightening is plenty. overtightening causes the metal to 'dimple' around the bolt hole creating leaksHow do I change the Valve/Oil pan Gaskets on Honda Prelude?

  • My 88 Toyota Cressida has a oil leak, looks like its coming from the join of the oil pan?

How hard is it to remove the oil pan and resilicone with gasket maker, has anyone done this and how successful was it? Also does anyone know why my driving lights are not working? I cannot drive my car at night unless I hold the light switch forward whilst driving, very difficult, have checked fuses under bonnet, NRMA guy said the switch for the driving lights is behind the steering wheel, have looked but cannot see anything resembling a fuse, how do I tackle this problem. My 88 Toyota Cressida has a oil leak, looks like its coming from the join of the oil pan?
oil pans are reasonably easy to change, a local parts shop should have a gasket for your sump but if not then a liquid gasket with a good heat resistance should do the trick, just make sure that the sump bolts are tourqued up correctly. It should also allow you to clean any sludge build up in the sump.

As for your problem with the driving lights, im assuming that its high beam that is causing the trouble? Its more likely than not that you need to replace a relay for the lights. You can get one from any auto parts retailer, just make sure you check the old one to see what the amperage rating is and how many pins it has on the bottom.

Sealant for gasket on transmission oil pan?

My boyfriend is changing the oil on our 99 Pontiac Montana and he's asking if there is a sealant for the gasket on the transmission oil pan?Sealant for gasket on transmission oil pan?
Just use the gasket and make sure its bolted in tightly and you're good to go.Sealant for gasket on transmission oil pan?
Was their sealant when he dropped the pan or was it just a gasket? Almost all manufactures don't use sealant they use gasket's and they fit dry and they need torqued to the correct spec. Over tightening will cause leaks just as bad as under tightening.
I agree with ';CJ 78'; - just the gasket!!!!

I usually use a floor jack with a nice wide block of wood to distribute the load on the oil pan, and then put some blocks of wood in between the motor mount space to hold it up.

    Impossible
dude its easy to change a oil pan just unbolt the old one and bolt the new one up i dont think u hae to lift the engine on this car lol
If I'm right you have take the Motor Supports loose and elevate the Engine slightly to get the pan out.Go ahead and replace the Oil pump and Motor supports while you are at it.

Question about replacing an oil pan on my truck?

How many hours should an auto repair shop charge for this? Also, isn't there a website where I can find this information? The oil pan needs to be replaced on my 1992 Chev K1500. Thanks!Question about replacing an oil pan on my truck?
I had similar problems last week and was glad I got my repairs covered under my extended warranty. They are less expensive if you buy them aftermarket. http://www.autoadviceonline.com/Warranty-Quote.htmlQuestion about replacing an oil pan on my truck?
i would google it if you haven't

and oil pan should take too long.

they would obviously have to drain the oil and remove old pan. and the clean where existing seal is place new seal and apply new oil pan and either put existing oil back in or do an oil change.

    pretty simple.

    good lcuk
i believe you have to drop the sub frame and support the engine from top with a beam. pain in the *** and labor time probly calls for 5 hours, but i could be wrong. but usally on 4 cyl. engines, its much simpler
estimate 250 labor, 150 for the pan 40 for the gaskets.

probably will depend on where you live also.
Probably 3 to 4 hrs of shop time. You will not find a free web site that will answer your question. Call around to your local auto repair shops and ask them.

How to replace an Oil Pan on a 2001 VW Jetta?

I have a 2001 Jetta and the oil pan threating stripped and needs to be replaced, does anyone know how to replace it, if you have a page with a diagram it would be greatly appreciated but instructions or a place where I can get them would be appreciated also. Before hand thank you.How to replace an Oil Pan on a 2001 VW Jetta?
VW has had this problem for a few years now on many of it's vehicles. The oil pan is aluminum and strips easily. They have redesigned the oil pan and it now has a steel lower half that will not strip as easily. Have the pan replaced with the newer design (available at any vw dealer). Not knowing how much experience you hve, the pan isn't too hard to replace but there are two bolts near the transmission that are almost impossible to get out without the proper tools. Check the local library for repair manuals or purchase one at most auto part stores. How to replace an Oil Pan on a 2001 VW Jetta?
Not a machanic but I do know that when your tightining the oil pan to the new gasket, be careful not to do it too tightly or there will be ';bows'; in the gasket allowing oil to seep out. Just to keep in mind....
If the drain plug is stripped out and will not tighten up I would first try and clean out the suspected drain hole on the oil pan and if that doesn鈥檛 work I would try and rethread the oil pan to same size first with a new plug and if unsuccessful rethread to a larger plug before you replace the oil pan.

2001 Camry -- How to tell if the oil pan threads or drain plug threads are stripped?

I did an oil change yesterday and accidentally stripped the oil pan or drain plug thread. It just kept turning and turning. I don't know which is actually stripped though. I have been reading of some plugs that strip instead of the oil pan... how do I tell if this is the case. I am worried that I will have to drop big buck on a new pan and hope this isn't the case. I know there are self-tapping plugs, too, but a lot of people claim they do not hold up well.2001 Camry -- How to tell if the oil pan threads or drain plug threads are stripped?
I believe you probably only stripped the plug not the pan, reason i think this is, on newer vehicles oil pans are made with a different material than the drain plugs. They are made with a stronger metal and the drain plug is typically an alluminum type alloy. This helps prevent you from having to replace a whole drain pan. You have a new enough model that Im 99% sure that you just need a new plug.2001 Camry -- How to tell if the oil pan threads or drain plug threads are stripped?
Remove the plug and look at it. If it appears damaged, go to your local Toyota parts department with it and ask for a replacement.
Umm.. just take a look at the plug. Is it stripped? Replace it if it is.

  • If I replace the lower Oil Pan in my car, is it also a good idea to change the oil pump?

Could the oil pump malfunction if the oil pan is removed? If I replace the lower Oil Pan in my car, is it also a good idea to change the oil pump?
Any time, Absolutely any time you drop and or replace the oil pan you should check the main barrings and replace the oil pump, even if it is working fine.If I replace the lower Oil Pan in my car, is it also a good idea to change the oil pump?
in the real world the oil pump is never bad.what it's get bad is the oil pressure release valve and/or the gear in the shaft of the distributor.

check the ball and the spring on the pressure release valve of the pump.
Oil pan removal/installation has nothing to do and should not affect operation of the oil pump. First of all, most vehicles don't even have oil pumps in the lower end, and all decent ones have pumps incorporated in the timing cover. Well-built engines provide pump life exceeding that of the rest of the vehicle. If what you are talking about is of a different kind, replace everything once you get access to it.
For what ever reason you are replacing the pan, unless severe damage was done, you don't NEED to replace the oil pump, But as I have rebuilt many engines, I have taken the precaution to replace the pump when i have the pan down, for the minimal cost it is great insurance..
it is good to be salf than sorry
most mechanics especially shade tree mechanics like to change this part at the time that they have the oil pan off. this is because that way you only have to change the oil pan gasket one time. and it is not really that expensive and is the only other part in there....just lessens the possiblity of taking it off again....not a must but a why not...
depending on the year, it wouldnt hurt to check prices out. In mitsubishis, the oil pumps like to seize and then your engine is gone. Just simply changing the oil pan wont affect the pump.
if your going to change the oil pan,you dont have to change the oil pump, butit would be a good idea to,for all they cost.just remember to pack the new 1 with petroleum jelly,so the pump will have something to prime itself.

How do i replace a civic oil pan?

i have a b16 engine.. DOHC 1.6 l on my ex, engine from the 99 si.. well, the thread on my oil drain is stripped.. i was planning on going to the junk yard to get a replacement for it.. is there any other model that uses the same oil pan, such as an integra or other civic?.. if so what year and model?.. thanksHow do i replace a civic oil pan?
save your self the trouble, and go buy a new one that does not have all of the dents and dings in it. you want to match the car exactly really. How do i replace a civic oil pan?
trusting arent you? if i were you i'd go to autozone, buy a chiltons manual for your car (otherwise known as the car bible) and ask one of thier guys his opinion. usually those guys know a lot because they're the old school shade tree mechanics.
Lisle tools sells a kit for drilling and tapping out a new larger drain plug. If your gonna replace it go with a new one cuz there cheap anyhow.

I have a '95 Nissan Maxima with a coolant leak above the oil pan. Where is the weep hole for the water pump?

I can't find it on the water pump side of the engine, nor is there a leak and don't want to replace the water pump if it could be something else. Thanks.I have a '95 Nissan Maxima with a coolant leak above the oil pan. Where is the weep hole for the water pump?
Remember Ray I told you if you have a suspicious coolant leak at the AC compressor bracket on the front of the motor? Behind the compressor bracket about 5 '; below the thermostat housing is where the water pump leaks out the weep channel. Between the engine block and the front timing cover just above the oil pan.

Is the oil pump housing and oil pan the same thing?

My ';oil pump housing'; is covered under warranty. Not sure if the oil pan is, since I now have a crack in it and oil is leaking like a faucet. ThanksIs the oil pump housing and oil pan the same thing?
Oil pump housing is internal, and part of engine oil pump. Oil pan is external and called a sump. sorryIs the oil pump housing and oil pan the same thing?
depending on the make and model of your car, the pump can be either in the pan or on the front of the engine, but they are never the same piece.
no they are not the oil pump housing is the the oil pan or the sump...the housing will typically be located in a low spot of the oil pan

What parts do I need when replacing an oil pan?

I have a 2000 Jetta that needs a new oil pan. Apparently this is a common problem with VW's. What parts (besides the actual oil pan) will I need to order? Thanks!!What parts do I need when replacing an oil pan?
a gasket and sealantWhat parts do I need when replacing an oil pan?
main %26amp; pan gasket and permatex
    the gasket
oil pan gasket, oil, and torque specs for the retainer bolts for the pan..oh...and a torque wrench
Assuming you can re-use the bolts, you will need a new gasket and a tube of sealant.
if your ordering the pan from a shop like auto-zone they will tell you what is needed if its not included
gasket and sealant thats about it minus all the tools you will need
I think there will be a gasket sealer that you get in a squeeze tube.

Cleaning all traces of oil from the surfaces that contact the gasket is important to get it to seal as well as possible.

Make sure you don't turn the bolts too tight, only as heard as the torque specs indicate so you don't snap off a bolt head like I did on my 95 neon. Had to live with a slow leak after that.
An oil pan gasket . You should get some permatix also from the parts store.

Howdo I remove an oil pan from a toyota corrolla at the junk yard?

1999 toyota what do I look for and which tools will I need? will I get really dirty?Howdo I remove an oil pan from a toyota corrolla at the junk yard?
oil pan only??, not the stiffner?, your going to need a 14mm wrench to drain the oil, then a 10mm socket, maybe a swival socket, extensions and the rachet. also a hammer and thin chisal or scraper to get the pan off. if its never been off, be ready to work your butt off to get it off the engine.Howdo I remove an oil pan from a toyota corrolla at the junk yard?
Oil pan removal is simple. All you need is a socket wrench and one socket. Find out what size you need from the bolts in your old oil pan. Just unscrew them and use a flathead screwdriver to pry the pan off the gasket. Yep, you'll get dirty.
if u dont know the answers to those questions...u shouldnt be going...period

I looked really well on the side with the water pump but could see no visible water. What is my next step to find out where it's coming from. Thanks.I have a '95 Nissan Maxima and have a leak coming from above the oil pan. What could it possibly be?
Coolant dripping off of the A/C compressor bracket? Yes the water pump drips there. Because the water pump is chain driven the vent is behind the timing cover just above the oil pan on the front of the engine. Some times the leak will stop and start again. Still only one FIX replace the water pump. A word of warning the early 1995 and 1996 Maxima's don't have the latest designed chain tensioner. If it were my car I would also replace the tensioner too. Location of the pump and special precautions water pump pulling bolts changing oil and draining coolant 2 different size 3'; o rings I would not recommend this job be done in the back yard.I have a '95 Nissan Maxima and have a leak coming from above the oil pan. Can i change piston rings on a 2.0 1g dsm motor from the oil pan as an entry point?

i poured trans fluid in the spark plug hole and let it sit. after replacing the plug drove it until the sticky ring straightened up. a day later i have low compression again in cylinder #2. can i pull the piston from below or will i need to take the cylinder head off?Can i change piston rings on a 2.0 1g dsm motor from the oil pan as an entry point?
It is absolutely impossible to remove the piston from the bottom. The cylinder block has ';webs'; that the manufacturers use to mount the crankshaft.

Speaking of crankshafts, how are you going to pull the piston down through that? How are you going to remove the crankshaft with the engine bolted to the transmission and a timing belt attached to the front?

The engine should come out and be rebuilt or replaced. The cylinders shouldbe bored and/or honed at a minimum. Can i change piston rings on a 2.0 1g dsm motor from the oil pan as an entry point?
You CAN pull it from below, but I don't advise it, your head side of the cylinder is beveled to aid in piston installation, your wear is also at the top of the cylinder, allowing the piston rings to ease into place. Remember, too that your clearances are much smaller at the skirt of the cylinder wall than at the head, this can cause you to cut your ring end gap too large just to fit them correctly.

If you drove the engine until the ring straightened up, are you sure the ring didn't twist and score the cylinder wall?
You're only going to replace the rings on one piston? Bit of a waste of time.

To do it properly, you should remove the motor and also replace big end and conrod bearings while the motor is out, and replace all the rings.

You MAY be able to get away with unbolting the engine mounts, removing the sump, jacking up the motor and removing the piston, however, its not the ideal way to do it. Im not familiar with the motor, but if it is a front wheel drive car, it will nearly be impossible.

Do things the proper way. Its far easier in the long run.
I agree with sfur74, you can't do it.

What kind of pressure does it need to tighten a 19hp briggs & stratton oil pan on a riding lawn mower?

Just get the oil pan bolts ';snug'; tight. If you tighten them really hard you will squeeze the gasket out and possibly warp the pan. The bolts aren't that big too. When you put them on tighten them a little at a time in a cross pattern to put them on even. What kind of pressure does it need to tighten a 19hp briggs %26amp; stratton oil pan on a riding lawn mower?
Carl has the right answer. Don't use thread locker. It is not necessary and will be difficult to remove later. Snug them up and keep them even. What kind of pressure does it need to tighten a 19hp briggs %26amp; stratton oil pan on a riding lawn mower?
Snug the bolts hard and use lock tight
about a half turn before it snaps

The Manual will give you torque limits for

    different bolt sizes.

blown head gasket or blown intake manifold gasket.I need to know why water would go to oil pan?
one of three things will cause this. a blown head gasket, a cracked head, or a cracked block. good luck, but you need to get into a shop to have it diagnosed.
most likely the head gasket is blown or the head is craked is the engine running ruff and is their white smoke coming from the exahust when the run for awhile
Blown head gasket, cracked cylinder head or cracked block. Field strip the motor if you're curious.

I have gas in the oil pan of my 1969 Firebird, carb or head gaskets?

I thought it might be a head gasket issue but the more I read the more I think its my carb. What should I do to my carb to fix it? Its a 4bl Edlebrock and manual fuel pump. Any suggestions? I am mechanically inclined but not mechanically knowledgeable, so any help would be great. I will attempt anything, so please don't tell me to take it to a mechanic!I have gas in the oil pan of my 1969 Firebird, carb or head gaskets?
um do you have a vented gas cap?if not, purchase one.thought i should explain, the fuel in the tank is building pressure in the heat.the only place it can go is through the carb, the float needle and seat arent designed for more than around 6-7 psi.so its bleeding by there, filling the bowl way to full and then running down into the intake.have experienced this after plugging a broken vapor cannister to get by for a week or so.I have gas in the oil pan of my 1969 Firebird, carb or head gaskets?
Well, one problem carburetors had was that the float became saturated with fuel and wasn't properly bouyant enough. So what I would do is replace the float with a new one and reset the float level to the specification shown in the carburetor rebuild kit. Ask Edlebrock if they sell a rebuild kit with new float and the flow control pin that hooks to the float lever. But the above comments about a leaking fuel pump diaphram or excessive fuel vapor pressure sound like other good answers. Also, short trip driving could dilute the oil with gas and would be burned off on a longer trip. Then you'll see your engine oil level go down real fast as the gas burns off with sustained hot engine operation.
I'm had oil contamination issues with AC-Delco fuel pumps on my '69 GTO 400cu.in. However, they have a bleed hole at the bottom which would also drip gas externally.

The float saturation is common with the original Rodchester carb that used that ';cellular plastic'; POS. Like the Holly, I think your Elderbrock uses a brass float.

So, no external fuel leak? Go with the tank venting issue.
other ways that gas can enter your oil pan is either; pass the oil rings located around the pistons (bad rings), the head/head gasket. or the block. Pull the spark plugs one at a time to check for a heavy gas smell, or oil saturation; that will tell you which rings (if any) are bad.

You could pull the heads and have them checked ( there is no other way to check for hairline cracks ).
nah u dont have to unless u no wat ur doing jus u might be getting to much fual in there do u drive it really hard o preety easy or off and on...just try to let is run for about 5min start it with out puching the gas at all. if tha dont work u might need a new fuel pump....from wat it sounds like its kida hard on the computer to tell wat is aculy wrong

How do I pull the oil pan out out of a Blazer S-10 4wheel drive?

I have a 1986 Chevy Blazer S-10 4 wheel drive. I need to replace the rear seal. HOW do I pull the oil pan, there is a long return on the oil pump pick up, and the clearance is too small. No offence but if you need to ask this question on Yahoo maybe you shouldn't be attempting this job yourself better to pay a mechanic to do it. I'm not familiar with the Blazer S-10 but I'm sure if it,s 4wd the front diff housing would be in the way of the oil pan. Which means you're got a big job on your hands.
Pulling the pan will only take a long time and get you nowhere and you will have to pull the motor. What you need to do is pull the trans , or the motor . The rear seal is behind the flywheel/flexplate , not under the oil pan, And there are no online manuals you can acces from home . Besides , a proper repair manual is around $20 .
this particular job requires that the trans be pulled. this seal is a round seal that is installed behind the flexplate. a lot of work.
I'm pretty sure that you'll have'ta slide the trans back about 4 inches %26amp; just lower the oil pan. An ' haynes' manual cost only about $18 at your nearest parts store.

One thing to try is clamping a large set of Vice Grips on the head of the drain plug and pull out while turning. Another is if there is room between the head of the drain plug, put as large a screwdriver that will fit between the plug and oil pan and apply pressure to the drain plug as you turn. Slow, but it does work most times. How to remove a stripped oil pan bolt?

RiV has the right idea..... but once you get the drain plug out, inspect the threads on the oil pan. If they are damaged, you can get a drain plug repair kit at your local auto parts store. It's an oversize plug that cuts new threads when you install it. Be careful not to cross-thread the plug.
sounds like you stripped the threads of the oil pan.

    is it just spinning now?

drilling it out will be difficult since it is turning.

How much does it cost to replace an oil pan gasket on a 1999 dodge intrpeid?

Labor at about $100 an hour, plus gasket and oil change. So about $150- $200.How much does it cost to replace an oil pan gasket on a 1999 dodge intrpeid?
it cost about 100 buck to do one of those and that's counting changing the oil and cleaning the oil pick up tube and all out on them,i know i have done enough of them in the past year or so,and that's a good fair price for labor and parts, good luck. How much does it cost to replace an oil pan gasket on a 1999 dodge intrpeid?
Well parts are extremely cheap but they will get you with labor and an oil change then they will start adding on things that they see wrong. I say you would be looking at a 2-3 hour job so your prob looking at 200 to replace etc
50 dollars would be worth it , if it includes an oil change and filter
Not too bad. Roughly 100 bucks

What size bolts do I need for my oil pan on a 1993 Ford Escort Wagon 1.9 engine?

I couldn't figure out why it was leaking until I got under it. The bigger bolts are still in place but the smaller ones are missing. I can't find these answers anywhere on the internet. Please Help!!!What size bolts do I need for my oil pan on a 1993 Ford Escort Wagon 1.9 engine?
I believe that the smaller bolts that run down the sides of the oil pan are 6mmx1.00 about an inch long. Your best bet on finding the exact size of these bolts is to call your local ford dealer and he/she can look them up and may even have them. If the dealer does not have them then you will be able to take the size they give you and go to the local parts store or hardware store and get them.

    Hope this helps

I have a '95 Nissan Maxima and have a coolant leak coming from above the oil pan. What could it possibly be?

I looked really well on the side near and around the water pump but could see no visible moisture. What is my next step to find out where it's coming from? Is there a coolant drain plug leaking around there? Thanks.I have a '95 Nissan Maxima and have a coolant leak coming from above the oil pan. What could it possibly be?
There's a lot of places for coolant to leak above the oil pan. Move the car to a shaded area and up on ramps to improve your visibility. Use a bright hand-held light. A focusing flashlight will work too. Get under there and stay clear of the belts and fan. Trace it backwards. Look really close at the underside of the water pump. Most have a weep hole where coolant escapes indicating the water pump bearings are failing. If your lucky it will be a hose.I have a '95 Nissan Maxima and have a coolant leak coming from above the oil pan. What could it possibly be?
start from your radiator and follow the hoses you will find it!
There could be a freeze plug leaking. But my guess would be your bypass hose.

1984 Toyota PIckup - how to remove tie rods to get to oil pan?

I have a 1984 toyota pick up and we are trying to change the oil pan gasket but we are having trouble getting the tie rods of to get to it. I read somewhere that you need a tie-rod-end puller or a two-jaw unit. What is this used for? Never messed with tie rods before so I want to make sure I dont mess the truck up but I NEED to change that gasket. Let me know if you can give me some advise I can even take pictures if you would like. Thanks!1984 Toyota PIckup - how to remove tie rods to get to oil pan?
The first thing you need to do is stop by your local auto parts store and pic up the repair manual for your toyota.

Then, read up on the repair. Buy, borrow or rent the tools you need to remove the oil pan and get to work.1984 Toyota PIckup - how to remove tie rods to get to oil pan?
';If you've never it before or seen it done get it to a shop or see if you know some one that has had pulled and replaced tie-rods before!'; after you get this done you're going to have to have the alignment checked.
Here is a link to a manual for an 85 (same as 84 for that stuff). right click and save it, hope you aren't on dialup! LOL

I have a local parts store that rents the tools for the tie rods. You leave a deposit and then get every penny back when you are done. The even told me that if I break the tool thats no problem. Don't get the pickle fork, that might damage the tie rod ends, make sure it's the puller that you have to tighten down to pop them off.

The best stuff I've used for that oil pan is the Toyota FIPG gasket maker. It's a tube of RTV type stuff and works great at sealing up that oil pan. They sell it at the dealer for like $5.

I have had the valve cover and oil pan off for 4 days?

Should I pour some oil over the valves / cams before manually cranking?I have had the valve cover and oil pan off for 4 days?
put the oil pan back on and then dump some oil over the valves and put the valve cover back on and refill the crankcase and your good to go.I have had the valve cover and oil pan off for 4 days?
You should just put the valve cover and oil pan back on put fill with oil and put a new oil filter on. Let let it idle for alittle bit then check it again, then drive it for about 100 miles then change the oil out again. Do this about 2 times to make sure you get all the dirt and other stuff out of the engine.
I always use marvel mystery oil for start up after open awhile, then pour the rest in with your fresh oil, great stuff.

Ok i have a 1988 chevy s10 pickup truck there is a problem with it the problem is the gas is geting into the oil pan when i read the oil stick it is way off the full mark the engine seems to run fine and it does have a little smoke to the end of the pipe when running i was lso wondering if i could fix that problem of if i have to get a hole new motor thanks for your help...How do i fix a gas in oil pan problem?
Bad fuel injector or fuel pressure regulator.Have it checked at a shop before you ruin your engine. It will run fine right up untill the second it locks up.How do i fix a gas in oil pan problem?
if its got a manuel fuel pump, the diafram is busted in it and the gas and oil is mixing. if its fuel injected, the fuel pump regulator is bad and letting too much pressure into the injectors and running into the oil.
the problem is a fuel issue. is this engine Carburated? have you an electric fuel pump added? some minor fuel dillusion is normal on carburated motors not much but a tiny bit thats why oil usually needs changed at certain intervals, but eniugh to raise the dipstick level is only two posibilities fuel running out the carb floatbowls and into the cylinders, thias would cause very bad running lots of stalling or not starting due to hydraulic lock up. the other possible reason is you have amechanical fuel pump on the side of the block and the diaphram inside has blown a hole and is pumping it (fuel) into the block. this wont clearly be recognised except by lots of raw gas in the oil pan and a slight running performance condition.

How do I flush engine of Oil/water in oil pan?

Pin hole in timing chain cover allowed water into oil pan from water pump. 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 w/ 5.2 Liter. Mixture came up out of dip stick tube. Is there a flush I can buy? Or do I just replace the filter and oil a couple of times. All 8 plugs are clean and dry. Driven 28 miles in this situation. How do I flush engine of Oil/water in oil pan?
Go to your local auto parts store and ask them for an additive to remove gunk and moisture in your oil.

Go home and drain the pan. Leave the filter be for now.

Fill engine with required amount of oil minus 1 quart. You need room for the additive.

Drive around the neighborhood and get the oil nice and hot. The additive instructions should tell you how long.

When you get back home dump the oil immediately while it is still hot. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN YOURSELF.

Replace the oil filter and refill the engine with the required quarts of oil.

You'll be good to go.How do I flush engine of Oil/water in oil pan?
In addition to what ever you do to change the oil filter and drain and refill a couple times, when your ready for the final new oil and filter, definitely use http://www.mobiloil.com synthetic oil or similar to protect the engine at least for a couple oil changes. Of course smaller amounts of water (condensation) are normally burned off from the hot oil as you drive.
you can take out the oil plug then pour about a gallon of diesel fuel in were you put your oil an the diesel fuel will fluse the water an old oil out leave the cap an oil plug out for about an hour then put plug back in an fill with new oil.
just drain the oil and change the oil and filter. drive it for awhile and change it again. a couple of times then you should be ok.
Drain the oil and remove the oil pan and clean it. The amount of water left over should be tiny and will evaporate when the engine is hot enough.
drain oil pan for a few days fill oil pan and crank run a few days drain wil do it you can add a oil flush if you want but just simlpe draining it type into search box how to flush a motor should really you can find how to replace most anything just by typing it into search box How do I flush engine would work you want a video add that to end like How do I flush engine video

  • How do you change the oil pan gasket on a 1991 honda civic wagon?

If the exhaust sits under the oil pan, you would first have to take that off from the headers, in front of the engine, and pull it down( or just take it off completely). Then you would have to drain out all of the oil by unbolting the, usually, 14 mm bolt that's on the bottom of oil pan. Then, you would unbolt the 10 mm bolts that hold the oil pan in place. Theres usually 10+ of those, not sure on the amount though. After that you would remove the gaskey from the oil pan and thoroughly cleanse the cut out of where the gasket is on the oil pan. After that place the new gasket and assemble the exact way that you disassembled.

    Hope that helps.

At some salvage yards, they put a hole in the pan to quickly drain the oil, as was the case in mine, but i found a friend who welded the hole up for me and i was good after that. If you plan on taking your vehicle to a professional, the average cost ranges from 20 to 25 dollars. This includes the parts that is put in as well as the labor.

Changing an oil pan is a pretty straightforward job. Unbolt the old one and scrape off the old gasket. Replace the gasket and bolt the new pan in place. Check a service manual to see how much torque to tighten the bolts and there might be a sequence to tightening them. The only things that can make it a complicated job are a frame crossmember or suspension components in the way. Look under the car to determine if that's the case with an Intrepid. Why does the original pan need replacing? Was it damaged in an accident? There isn't much else that can go wrong with an oil pan. If the problem is stripped threads at the drain it will be easier to rethread the hole and use a larger plug than to replace the pan.

Put hot water in the pan along with one or two fabric softener sheets. Let it soak overnight. It comes off very easily then.
scrub gently with an s o s pad. may take a while if it has been that way for a while but it does work.
use lime juice or try tamarind.
my favorite type of pans. i use a steel wool pad (not too coarse). a little soap. if it has been there for some time, i have also filled the vessel about 1/4 - 1/2 of the way with water, add a drop or two of dish soap. heat on the stove. remove and make sure it is cool enough to handle. use the steel wool with more dish soap and give a good scrub. they will look shiny clean again. this is the only way to go. great on cookie sheets too! good luck.
there麓s 3 ways.. scrub scrub and scrub...
good news, since they are stainless steel, you could soak the pots in baking soda and water so it forms a paste and then use a wire scrubber to clean. Other materials could be scratched seriously, but stainless steel might get scratched, but it doesn't ruin the pot

You would be best to replace the oil pan completely. There may be a good used one available through a local auto wrecker. If you are not wanting to do it yourself, take it to a shop. Even if you were able to get the plug out, it would not be wise to put in one of those oversize replacements that the parts stores sell. They always leak after a little while and aren't worth the trouble. How to remove a bolt with stripped threads on oil pan?

    Replace the oil pan.
I'd try to apply downward pressure on the bolt as I turned it with the vise grips locked tightly to it. Put a thin washer over the nut, then lock the vise grip to the nut. Insert a U shaped fork above the washer and lever it down to keep pressure on the nut as you turn it slowly.
yup gota pullit and fix it,,if ya could get the bolt out they make a fix for it with a self tapping plug with a drain bolt in it
i forget what it is called but i did this once and took it to a shop they used a special tool fot that all i know is it has teeth in it and u slide it over the bolt then tighten and what do u know it came right off. just go to ur local oil shop or mechanic, good luck man

Like I said... call around for a repair kit.

Another option... try JiffyLube. Believe it or not (haha) they strip out enough of them, that they usually keep repair kits in stock so when their petty ';Technicians'; destroy things, they slap one in.

    - Good Luck!If the threads on my oil pan are stripped, how would I repair it?
Your local auto parts store will have a new plug to fix your problem. Basically, it cuts new threads in the pan. Be sure to explain the problem, so they don't sell you the original replacement plug. Also, you can apply Teflon tape to the threads which will stop a minor drip.
they sell an oversized plug that has self tapping

    threads....just for this problem.
you could try re threading it with a tap %26amp;dye one size bigger then buy a bolt that fits those threads or buy a new oil pan
go to the parts store and take your old oil plug with you and they will give you a self tapping oil plug that you just screw in and that will be your new oil plug.
several options, helicoil can be put in at a auto shop.(cheepest root) . or take the pan off and weld a new nut the same size as drain plug was. you will have to weld the old hole shut

We found the source it is the oil pan. It is in an awkward position we are having problems removing the bolts toward the back. Any suggestions?I need help replacing an oil pan gasket on a 1984 toyota tercel wagon?
lt is tough to access the bolts once the engine is in because of the cross member and trans brackets. You may have to remove the brackets/stiffeners. It helps to remove the engine mount bolts and jack up the engine, but be real careful not to go too high and watch the clearances-also support the oilpan with a wide block of wood so as not to crush it. once loose, it has to come down far enough to get by the oil pickup.--Good luck

What would cause something to break loose in an engine and come through the oil pan?

I was having other work done and the people who were repairing it said they took it for a test drive when they think it blew a rod. They said that they are not sure that it was a rod...but something in the engine blew out and came through the pan. What would cause something to break loose in an engine and come through the oil pan?
Usually a rod bolt or rod cap breaks first. Very seldom does a connecting rod break with not other causes except extreme high RPM usage or racing conditions. The causes may have been a spun rod or main bearing. Depending on the engine a timing chain or belt may have broken causing the pistons to smash against the valves.

Occasionally the oil pump fails and the motor starves for oil almost immediately wiping out the oil pressure. If the driver didn't happen to actually see the dash oil light come on that may have been what happened.

In my opinion in a perfect world the ignition should shut off when the oil pressure ever falls below a pre-set point. This would save a lot of motors. What would cause something to break loose in an engine and come through the oil pan?
heat, vibration, wear, time, lack of lubrication. etc

    Many cases
the connecting rod came loose or broke and came through the oil pan.

I changed the valve cover on the car and carbon got into the oil pan and filter. Now it is not getting enough pressure to pick up the oil. Is there anything I can use to put in the oil pan without removing itHow can I remove carbon from the oil pan of a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport?
There is nothing you can put in your oil to dissolve the hard carbon';quick style';. If you find a chemical that strong and use it, it would also eat up all your rubber seals causing massive oil leaks (front seal, rear main seal etc).

If your oil is not being picked up by the oil pump..chances are your oil pick up screen in your crankcase is clogged. Remove the oil pan, and clean off the bits and pieces of the carbon. Pour some oil into the valve cover to flush out remaining debris while oil pan is off. Reinstall with a new oil pan gasket, oil and filter. Start engine and notice your oil light or oil pressor gauge. If pressure is normal after you do this, drive for 500 miles and redo an oil change with filter as ';an insurance policy';.How can I remove carbon from the oil pan of a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport?
I am thinking what you mean is when you changed the valve cover some black carbon deposits fell into the top of the engine and made there way to the oil pan? if they were large peices couldn't you have picked them out of the top before you put the valve cover back on? if any chunks have made it to the oil pan then I would probably dump that oil and hopefully most of the bits come out with the old oil and then give it some fresh new oil and new oil filter, as what you are saying it's pretty bad if it can't even pick up oil from the sump...
Sounds bad, drain the engine oil, poor in 4 litres of kerosene crank the engine 1 or 2 minutes without letting it start, drain asap and replace filter, refill with recommended oil.

As soon kerosene poured in things should be done fast to avoid seals and gasket contaminations.

Did on dozens of engines specially diesels.

    Try at your risk.

Oil pan threads stripped, how to make new threads and install a bigger plug?

I have a 97 Camry and it took forever to remove the drain plug. I found out that the oil pan threads are stripped. What tool(s) do I need to make new threads in the pan that would be the most cost-effective? Thanks.Oil pan threads stripped, how to make new threads and install a bigger plug?
i own a repair shop, and they make an over sized plug for it,,that will re-thread its self in there,,they work great, and act just like the original plug does,,and this one wont strip out,,i have used a lot of them, and they do work good,,there a mechanics best friend, and i always keep a few of them around the shop,,just in case, but that will fix it permanently and you don't have to worry about it anymore,no need to replace the pan either, good luck,i hope this help,s.Oil pan threads stripped, how to make new threads and install a bigger plug?
LOts of parts store sell oil pan repair kit for this problem. If your good with cars try it yourself but if not take it to a repair shop. You need to tap out the threads in the pan to a bigger size and make sure they are straight. If they are not straight it will leak badly .
Use a Helicoil. It is a threaded insert that looks like a spring and fits into its own oversize threads that you make in the hole.

Helicoils are easy to install. The kit comes with everything you need (tap, helicoil tool, and helicoils) and you can use the original oil plug.

The best thing about a helicoil instead of tapping to a larger size is that if the helicoil gets shot, you can just put in another one. (A 1997 Toyota is going to last you many more years). Also helicoils are very tough so they will last longer than threads in the pan.
Helicoil Kit ,,,, you can find this at any of your automotive hardware shops

    Good Luck
You need a thread-chaser or an oversized, self-tapping drain plug. These may be only temporary fixes though and you may want to consider replacing the pan.
STOP BY NAPA, ANY AUTO PARTS STORE, GET THE TOOL AND AN HOUR LATER YOUR DONE.TOOL AND EVERYTHING $20 TOTAL

    GOD BLESS
parts house. over size self tapping take your old one with you so they can get you the next size its easy

What is a reasonable price to pay for a ripped oil pan, alignment, and broken shock to get fixed?

2.6 hours on the pan x shop rate mine is $50

    pluss pan $100

    shocks installed $100

align $50What is a reasonable price to pay for a ripped oil pan, alignment, and broken shock to get fixed?
If the oil pan is easily removed, meaning there is no obstruction where the engine needs to be raised up off the engine mounts, then it sounds like a couple hours labor plus the new pan and gasket and an oil change. Figure 150 labor 35 oil change and whatever for the actual pan say 150 dollars. An Alignment will run 60 the shock (strut) can be 150 for the part and 150 installation. I would say total about 850. Plus towing? What is a reasonable price to pay for a ripped oil pan, alignment, and broken shock to get fixed?
Alignment 60-70 bucks, also replace the shock on the other side as well or you'll have one side riding nice and the other bumping around like old jello. Are they original shocks? If so replace all 4, you'll be happy you did.
Not enough info. Car/make/model/year? You're looking at a big payment, easily in excess of $1000. Sometimes the engine has to be raised in order to install a new oil pan!
Alignments usually run $60-80, Shock about $100 with shock, Oil pan hard to say. Don't know make, model, engine if they have to drop the cradle to replace.
depends on make/model/engine....easy 500 maybe 800 no more than that

    align 40 to 80

    shock/strut 60 to 200 struts cost a lot

    oil pan 200 + 200 labour tops
1000 to 1500 bucks call a few shops and ask will get you a better ideal

How do I remove a rounded oil pan bolt?

The car is a 2000 alero. I believe it is a 15mm bolt, and I need to get a replacement. How do I remove a rounded oil pan bolt?
    Hey Nate,

I am assuming that you stripped it. Clean it off with degreaser.

Try first to use a Vise-Grip. Sometimes you can get the grips on there and it will come off.

Since it's a metric bolt - Are you sure that it's not a hex head on the inside?

Last resort - Tap it out! A tap set is under $10 and you'll have it out in 10 minutes.

    Hope I helped,

James in San DiegoHow do I remove a rounded oil pan bolt?
a pair of vice grips or locking pliers
A dremel tool with a sanding disk, can reshape the bolt, and make it flat on edges you need.

I often use the disks, (which are paper thin and easy to break by the way), to cut a slot into a screw that is stripped.

So a Philipps screw becomes slotted.

You might not want to cut a slot into your bolt, because it may weaken it, but reshaping the edges to make it square, will make it easy to remove.

To avoid the disks from breaking, I use two at a time, to add strength. Depends on the job, paper thin cut, or more for strength.
they make kits to remove rounded bolts you can pick the kit at sears ask the guy for the bolt extractors
Vice grips will usually work. If necessary, use that spray brake cleaner to remove any oil. Excellent way to dissolve oil is brake cleaner, on any metal surface. You might have to use a propane torch. (Don't heat the bolt, heat the part the bolt sticks into!).
vice grips will take it out if it is rounded off.
Just use a 12 pt. socket. use one thats too small so you have to tap it on with a hammer.
craftsman makes a set of sockets that get tighter on the head as you loosen. just for rounded head bolts. sounds like a big bolt for a oil pan but any auto parts or hardware store will have a replacement bolt for it once you have it out. nothing to worry about. hope this helps

Is there a difference between the oil pan of an automatic and a manual 85 mercedes 300CD Turbo Diesel?

My GF has an automatic and I ordered the only oil pan that alleuropeanparts.com has to offer, but then I saw the gaskets on a different site had automatic transmission ones. Also, can we just use her old one. I know there's know way of telling for sure, but what are the chances of it beeing re-useable?Is there a difference between the oil pan of an automatic and a manual 85 mercedes 300CD Turbo Diesel?
';Not Clear'; Engine or Transmission Oil Pan? Transmission Type has nothing to do with the Engine Oil Pan Gasket! ';Look again, Make sure of what you are ordering!'; If you can't order the Pan with a Gasket Don't order it! If you use to he Old Gasket ';It's Going to Leak'; if not now it will within a week.

Can aluminum oil pans for cars be welded?

My car has a small scrape on the bottom of the oil pan and ot started leaking, its an 06 Dodge Stratus. I was wondering instead of replacing the oil pan could it be welded since replacing it costs a lot more and its very hard to find the pan? Can aluminum oil pans for cars be welded?
It can be welded ,but your going to have to take it off to weld the hold up.The reason is that the oil can't be there when you weld , it would get to hot and might not stick right are it could cause a bigger hold in it.Can aluminum oil pans for cars be welded?
Yes it can be repaired, you will need to remove it from the vehicle and make sure it is spotlessly clean for successful welding. Aluminium welding requires a certain amount of skill, take it to a good welding shop and get a price quote first!.

    Good luck.
yes it can be welded, but will probably have to be removed from the car to do a proper job.
it can but it is cheaper and safer to replace it.

  • Are oil pans easily fixable for a nissan 300zx?

Nissan believes that the Oil Pan was dented on the bottom which is keeping the Oil supply tube from distributing Oil to the motor, I guess the tube sits just a 1/4'; from the bottom of the pan and is easily crimped or stopped up, I am not mechanically inclined to fix it but does anyone know how much the cost and labor would be to fix it?Are oil pans easily fixable for a nissan 300zx?
SLOW DOWN OIL SLICK. Nissan said the oil pan was smashed in so far that the oil pick up is not supplying enough engine oil to the cams bearings? If that was the case the pan would have to be approx 1'; deformed trust me a DENTED oil pan is the least of your problems. And removing the oil pan is a hassle. the motor needs to be supported from on top while the steering rack and sub frame is lowered enough to get the pan off. there are two different size rubber strips and silicone gasket sealer that seals the pant to the block. Mega mile motors running thin motor oil will almost show no oil pressure at idle as long as the lifters and cams are not ticking you should be OK. Next oil change use 20/50 synthetic oil or 20/50 regular oil and Nissan Or Mobil 1 oil filter good luck. If I was removing the oil pan on a high mileage car I would recommend rebuilding the motor. Are oil pans easily fixable for a nissan 300zx?
That is simple and hard at the same time. drain oil. get new gasket. remove pan. With rubber mallet and steel dolley pound back into shape. remove ALL old gasket from block and pan, and re-asseble!!!! :)
