and how does it work? Thanks for any help. im not actually doing one right now so i dont need info on a specific vehicle but i would really like to know how.How do you rethread a oil pan drain plug hole? what tools do i need and what do they do? what is meant by tap?
Go to your local auto parts store and tell them what vehicle you have and the size of engine. They will sell you an oversized drain plug that is self-taping. All you need is a wrench large enough to put the plug in.How do you rethread a oil pan drain plug hole? what tools do i need and what do they do? what is meant by tap?
A tap is the tool that cuts the threads in a drilled hole so as to put a screw or bolt. There are starting taps, bottom taps,

cleaning taps. You need a tap to clean the bad threads.

A large tap for a oil pan may run big bucks, so the best way for that is to bring the drain plug to an auto store and have them match the tap needed and rent it.
There are replacement plugs that self tap. But, if you had to tap one yourself you would first drill the hole to the next biggest size and then tap with the next biggest tap. There are also rubber plugs that you push in and then tighten with a wing nut on the end. The rubber expands and seals. A tap is a tool that cuts new threads.
Some vehicles like some Fords, have fine threads, which are easy to strip or crossthread..You can buy self-tapping plugs that are just a bit larger, but you need to exercise careful caution.O'Reillys or Auto Zone will fix you up.
