Can one weld a hairline crack in an oil pan?

vw passat 1.9 dti, year 00 has hairline crack in oil pan,can same be welded.

leaks oil from same,or do I need a replacment. Crack is at bottom of

pan.Can one weld a hairline crack in an oil pan?
Yes it can if it is clean enough. But it would have to be removed to clean and weld it. So why not spend the extra money to get a new one so as not to have to worry about the weld failing? Can one weld a hairline crack in an oil pan?
If its a steel pan then anything is possible why not

but alternatively you could go to a breakers yard and get a replacement that wont leak regardless....
REPLACE IT! or have some body tow it so you could blame them.
Sure you can weld it, but don't try doing that unless you remove the pan from the car and if you are going to go to all that trouble, why not replace it?
you can if tis steel but you need to remove it to weld it and if you gonna do that you might as well put a new one on ...REPEAT YOU CANNOT WELD WHILE IT IS ATTACHED TO THE ENGINE!!!
Unless you know someone that can weld aluminum and will do it reasonable ($$$) it would probably be cheaper to buy a new one or one from an auto graveyard. It will have to be removed from the car and cleaned. Then the welder should know how to prep it for repair. I have welded a couple, for some friends now, with no problems. Good luck.

(32 years welding)
you need to find out why it is cracked, most vw pans now are alloy so can't be welded, you don't want to do the new one up and find that it cracks because of a warped crankcase
just as easy to replace since you cant weld it while on car and if your take it off you have pass the hard part
The new one from GSF is only about 20 or 30 pounds... Welding could distort your sump, bending it out of shape and making it useless while you make the repair!
The crack will propagate.

Replace it.
It's certainly possible, but it would be simpler and cheaper in the long run to pick up a replacement from a breakers. Your sump has probably been thumped at some point and more cracks might develope. I'd only tackle a repair if it was impossible to obtain a replacement.
JB Weld?
hi there yes the sump can be welded steel is the cheapest to have done its a bit dearer if it is alloy which it probably is but either way the sump must be removed.it may work out cheaper to replace item with new or second hand.good luck with it
If it is steel it can be welded. You should drill a small hole at each end of the crack first as this will stop it recurring. If it is alloy, replacement would be advisable.
