Hmm, probably a couple of hundred dollars at the auto shop. Most auto shops require you to use parts they carry or order from their vendors. You can get a new one from an auto parts store, or a used one from the junk yard. If you get it from the junk yard you may have to pull it off yourself, or pay them extra to pull it for you (if they offer that service). Installing it is pretty simple. You will need a torque wrench. Either an inch pound or foot pound torque wrench. You can get the proper bolt torque from the library. The library has repair and overhaul manuals. And a little petroleum jelly works well to hold the gasket in place while installing the pan and gasket. Don't forget to scrape all the old gasket off. Once you have your information and parts together (assuming you have scraped the old gasket already), you can get the job done in an hour easily. What kind of job is it to replace an oil pan on a car?
if you take it to a dealership might be a few hundreds.

if you do it yourself it will be close to 100 just parts and new oil and the gasket.

take it to a regular auto repair shop and you'll be happy
Just go to your local auto junkyard, you might pick up one for about $35. It just involves a lot of bolts. You will need a new gasket too.

If I'm making scrambled eggs, do I need to butter or oil the pan?

If your using a non stick pan, not really but I like to give a spray of pam just to make it them not get crusty. If I'm making scrambled eggs, do I need to butter or oil the pan?
YES! Use either but make sure to coat the pan and a lil extra because the eggs will stick if you do not!If I'm making scrambled eggs, do I need to butter or oil the pan?
If you have a nonstick then no.
Just a little so that they don't stick. Also, for scrambled, I recommend beating the eggs in a bowl and mixing in some milk before cooking them. Delicious!
I would do butter but you need to watch the temperature of the heating element. Your butter will burn if the pan is too hot....try a medium heat and everything should be fine.
    Yes
oil of course!oil will cook it perfectly trust me and if u want to spice it up a little add onions
    Butter.
Either works. If you have meat then you can use the greese too...like bacon or sausage...it s good like that.

Start out with a warmed pan on me heat. Pour the eggs in ...wait till the bubble a bit then shove ad fold..not stir..the eggs around.

A good recipe for scram eggs is

1 tsp milk to each egg

    salt pepper

    cheese

Only put the cheese in after you see the eggs bubble.

You can also add onions and pepper and tomatoes as well. Again...only once the eggs have begun to bubble.

and always remember SHOVE and fold not STIR
Ever try MICROWAVING eggs? Put a couple on a plate or sauce dish, add some spices and butter, whip them up and put in the microwave about 1 minute. Much more than a minute and they get rubbery. They puff up real nice. I take some shredded cheese (not cheddar, it's too oily) and sprinkle on top, then hit it for about 20 -30 seconds more. mmmm good!
Not if you're using a non-stick teflon type pan. Otherwise, you should put a bit of butter on the pan.
    you can have eny

im a sort of a coook

How do you replace an oil pan on a 2001 honda civic? ?

Go to the parts store ask them for a book on your year and model that should give you all the steps too change the oil pan. just remember you need to put a new gasket in and don't crank down on the bolts you crush the gasket and it will leak.

Don't use any sealant. Motorcycle gaskets are made to compress and conform to any irregularities in the mating surfaces.
The best thing to use is the black RTV silicone. 1/4'; bead around the pan.

Why doesnt all the milky substance show up in my oil drain pan?

I had a substantial amount of water ijn my oil so I changed it immediatly (no it is not a blown head gasket It got in there from when I changed the intake manifold seal) anyways having that said about the milky oil I drained it and put it in a transparent open container why doesnt the oil look milky it just looks like regular black oil? I dont get itWhy doesnt all the milky substance show up in my oil drain pan?
it usually takes a little while for that to happen being water and oil don,t want to mix.Why doesnt all the milky substance show up in my oil drain pan?
the milky stuff is the water. The black stuff is the oil. Oil and water don't mix. If water gets where oil should be it will not support the load the oil will support, it will break down and squeeze out allowing metal to metal contact. Goodbye metal parts.
You are getting water in to your motor oil. Possible head gasket failure.

it could be a freeze plug leaking.
more than likely it is you front main crank seal.

How do you remove the oil pan on a 1995 grand am?

i am going to TRY to remove the pan because i was told the oil screen is clogged up can someone please provide me step by step instructions on how to clean and remove the oil pan and how to reinstall it. also if you can tell me how to check to see if my pcv valve is bad and where it is located and if the idle air control valve is the same as a thermostat. and what materials are needed to do this like rtv silicone or something. How do you remove the oil pan on a 1995 grand am?
Lift the Pontiac Grand Am with jacks and support it safely on a jack stand. Block the rear wheels.

Crawl under the vehicle and locate the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan. Place a large bucket under the drain plug, then loosen the drain plug with a socket wrench and let the oil drain into the bucket. Once all of the oil has drained, replace the plug securely.

Remove the engine mount strut bracket and the drive belt. Disconnect the lower and upper air conditioner compressor bolts. Loosen the oil pan bolts with a wrench, then remove them with your fingers so they don't drop into the bucket of oil. Remove the oil pan.

Scrape off the old gasket with a scraping tool and discard it. Clean the surface with engine degreaser to make sure it's completely free of debris and wipe out the inside of the oil pan.

Apply a thin bead of sealant around the perimeter of the surface and reattach the oil pan. Tighten the bolts with a torque wrench to 18 feet lbs. Reattach the air conditioner compressor bolts, engine mount bracket and drive belt.

Lift the vehicle enough to remove the jack stand, lower the vehicle and remove the jack. Refill the crankcase with fresh oil. A 2002 Grand Am will require 2 to 2.5 quarts of oil

Pour the old oil into an empty milk carton and dispose of it properly at a garage or at your neighborhood hazardous waste facility.

    Hope this helps

Why would a pan of oil start ';boiling'; AFTER only the bottom was cooled?

I was trying to sautee some stuff in oil, when I noticed the oil the food was starting to brown more than I wanted, I ran water in my sink, and put the bottom of the pan in the little water that didn't go down the drain. The oil, which was not boiling previously, started to boil, and I could see minuscule air bubbles rising from the pan.

Thanks. Why would a pan of oil start ';boiling'; AFTER only the bottom was cooled?
You probably got water in the pan with the oil. the boiling of the Oil was actually the water violently boiling away.

FYI this is a dangerous situation and the cause of many kitchen burns. The boiling water can cause oil to splatter on your skin and cause a bad burn.

If you have a pan of oil that is too hot, remove it form the heat. I have also found that adding some fresh oil from the bottle at room temperature will help cool down the whole mess very quickly. Why would a pan of oil start ';boiling'; AFTER only the bottom was cooled?
    You are right

When the bottom of the pan cooled suddenly due to the water in the sink, it created a very sharp temperature gradient (high change of temperature from one layer to the next layer of oil)

As you know boiling is a ';convection'; in which a liquid goes into a swirly circulation due to differing temperatures of various layers causing differing densities.

But in convection warmer layers from the bottom move up due to reduced density - but we seem to have the opposite situation here

Perhaps the oil at the edge of the surface got cooled and started sinking and displacing the rest of the hot oil...?

Or perhaps...its like the other answers: you might have got some moisture into the oil
oil doesnt boil, at least not at temps you can provid in your kitchen, you need to get it up in the 1,000 degree mark. for it to boil it must be evaporating, which we all know doesnt happen with oil, thats why its used in lotions, because it doesnt evap and locks in other liquids like water.

you probably got some water (maybe even a mist) in the pan. the oil was hot enough to heat the water to a boil.

    bolt is pretty much stripped

i think the mechanics used the uh air wrench thing

or they wanted to be mean and glued it in thereThe bolt of my oil pan is stuck wont move at all bought a gator grip thing didnt work any suggestions?
try using a bolt-out socket (twist) you can find it at sears they work great. The bolt of my oil pan is stuck wont move at all bought a gator grip thing didnt work any suggestions?
If You can get it of the ground for clearance use a socket wrench and a breaker bar it should lossen the bolt and allow you to take it out. When you do this it will sort of sound like you are breaking the metal but don't worry it won't when it finally come's loose you should hear a kind of craking noise coming from it. it will then be ready to take of the breaker bar and just us a socket wrench. this is a very common problem for most people. it just mean's that the mechanic cross threaded it. good luck
heat it a little bit and it will come out,a little heat goes a long way on removing those, they probably overtightened it the last time you had the oil changed on it,good luck.
first make sure you are turning it the right way. righty tighty lefty loosey. don't mean to offend but um anyone who calls a tool a thingy really shouldn't be using them. just kidding. you will probably have to replace your oil pan.
make sure your turning it the right way. try pounding a 6 point socket on it, get 1 thats a size smaller and try that.
    You need something like this:

I dropped the small bolt to hold the Cam position sensor into a 3.3 GM motor. Will it go to the oil pan?

I replaced my oil pan gasket last night, but i broke one of the bolts off. would this effect with the seal?

is there anyway to get it out? what kind of gasket sealer should i use? how long does it take to seal? would 19 out of 20 hold it? becuase after chaning it last night i ran it for about 30 in and it will still leaking. so i dont know if i just didn't let it sit long enough or it was something i did.I replaced my oil pan gasket last night, but i broke one of the bolts off. would this effect with the seal?
it should seal as soon as the bolts are done up- chances are that its still leaking because you snapped the bolt!

take the oilpan back off and see if you can get a pair of vice grips onto the broken bolt and wind it out.I replaced my oil pan gasket last night, but i broke one of the bolts off. would this effect with the seal?
I think there is more to the leak then one missing bolt. I would take it to the dealer and have it repaired. It will be expensive, but just accept it as necessary. A tip in the future would be to use a torque wrench or if u r right handed to use your left hand to tighten.

Using ur less strong hand is a good way not to over tighten fasteners.

I accidentally put gas in the oil pan of my lawnmower & didn't notice until the smoke came out. Can I fix it?

It is a brand new lawnmower that I have only used once before. I am looking at the manual and see that the oil can be drained and replaced but is it too late?I accidentally put gas in the oil pan of my lawnmower %26amp; didn't notice until the smoke came out. Can I fix it?
You ';should'; be okay. Drain the gas from the oil pan, fill with oil and drain again. Refill with the proper oil. I would think you are fine unless you ran it for a long period like that or if something else happened that you didn't mention when you started it and noticed the ';smoke';. Good luck.I accidentally put gas in the oil pan of my lawnmower %26amp; didn't notice until the smoke came out. Can I fix it?
If the mower was still running when you discovered the problem, then it's possible you didn't do any fatal damage. Drain, refill with oil and give it a shot. If it is blown, maybe you can play dumb and bring it back under warranty: but this isn't the ethical choice.
don't run it 1st you need to drain all the oil out i mean all of it then get add motor flush with some fresh oil and then run it for about 30 min so gets throw the motor and clean it then drain it once again and ad fresh oil that should do it and pray that it works lol if you got it in time it should be fine
You might have cleaned sludge out yer mowers engine. Get the oil and gas out and put some fresh oil in. I use diesel oil instead of gas but hay you done did the deed right? Dump the engine and restock it with the correct amount of oil and mow on. It should be ok.
If the mower engine will still crank easily, then just remove the gas/oil mixture and replace. Nice job getting it clean and all.

What do you prefer for an oil pan gasket? 1 piece or 3 piece?

I have an 84 suburban And I had recently put a new gasket set on the oilpan but split it (of course) on the last bolt so now Ive gotta redo-it, what is the better way to go

    1 piece

    or

    3 piece?

what is easier and quality wise is their a diffrence? Thanks!

(I used 3 piece last time. btw)What do you prefer for an oil pan gasket? 1 piece or 3 piece?
I always use a one piece gasket if it's available. there are some aftermarket companies that make performance gaskets that use the 3-piece design with crush limiters in the gasket so you can't over tighten the bolts and crack the gasket. When I use the one piece gaskets, I don't use any sealer on them either. Maybe just a dab in the corners where the timing cover meets the block. What do you prefer for an oil pan gasket? 1 piece or 3 piece?
    one piece
Good one piece gaskets have crush sleeves in them too. That's what I use on a racing V8 with no leaks.

*Do I unplug it before I start my car?

*Should I plug it in right after I get my car home, while the oil is still warm? Or should I wait?

Any additional info about it is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!A question about the oil heating pan on a Honda Civic?
I don't think you need it. I have never had a HOnda that didn't start even in subzero temperatures down to -38 degrees FA question about the oil heating pan on a Honda Civic?
the oil heater in your oil pan is there to make your car start alot easier in very cold temp. it can left plugged in for long periods of time, you dont have to unplug it before you start just make sure it is unplugged before you drive away, and plug it in when ever it is convenient for you
its for the winter, to warm up the oil so its easier to start

you can leave it plugged in all night, minimum time is about 3 hours before you start the car

i dont think you really need it

Can You Fix a Big Hole In an Oil Pan?

We have a '94 Ford Escort that we take up in a field and hit Huge Bumps with. We noticed a 4 or 5 inch hole in the oil pan will duct tape do the job?Can You Fix a Big Hole In an Oil Pan?
Duct tape might do the trick. At least until you put oil back in the pan.

The only ';fix'; would be to remove the pan, use a hammer to to get the metal back in shape and have it tig welded professionally.

It'd probably be cheaper to get one at a junkyard. Can You Fix a Big Hole In an Oil Pan?
No, you have to replace it. And if you hit something so hard as to put that large of a hole in the pan, you probably damaged the crankshaft too which spins very close to the bottom of the pan, as well as the oil pump.
No. You need an oil pan. You can get one from a junk yard. What surprises me is that your car is not already in the junk yard.
If the hole is that big, you will need to replace the oil pan. You can get one in a junkyard pretty cheap.
sure that and chewing gum two wire hangers might help also no you buy a new one cant repair oil pan
I hope this is a joke, but if it is not NO!!! You cannot repair the hole in an oil pan. It must be replaced.
replace the oil pan with another one.
you would have to clean it then put the tape on otherwise the heat will burn it off
Bubblegum, and bailing wire works good.

    Are oil drain pans necessary...?

or is there something else I can use that is perhaps a bit cheaper? Are oil drain pans necessary...?
I don't know my $9.95 oil drain pan is damn handy and beats the hell out of an old milk jug that I usually see people using. So I guess the old milk jug or fork over ten bucks for a decent drain pan.Are oil drain pans necessary...?
Unless you wanna make a hell of a mess trying to get it into a milk jug then I would spring the 10 bucks for one...its worth it
you can go to Wal-Mart and try to get an unexpensive one. thats where my boyfriend got mines when he changed my moms oil
You could, and have the auto parts store (or wherever you are legally dumping the oil at) will turn you away for using the wrong container..... atleast spend LESS than 10 bucks for one at wally world.
I guess anything that will fit underneath the car will do, so long as the oil does not eat through it. Remember to recycle your oil, most auto parts houses will accept your waste oil for free.
Jiffy Lube. Not cheaper, but if you don't want to deal with it. There is a pump system but it's expensive and you need the special drain plug to go with it all. That's the bomb, but it's for fleet vehicles when you change a lot of oil every day.
You could unravel some tin cans, duck tape em all together, then use super glue and baling wire to stick it underneath yer car.

nop .....do not grease the pan...oil already comes from the turkey/chicken....so there is no need!!..enjoy!What should be the temp of oil in pan for frying chicken? I have had the problem where by the time the?
    350.

Be sure you have at least 1'; of oil. Start with the oil at 350-375. Don't crowd the chicken in the pan or the temp of the oil will drop and the chicken won't fry properly. Do it in two batches if you have a lot of chicken.

An instant read thermometer helps a lot with frying. They are about $10.00 at WalMart.
    350 degrees F.
    350. You can not go wrong
The correct answer again is 350 degrees. A candy thermometer can go a long way to helping you get the oil to the correct temperature and maintain it

Jacking the car up using the oil pan?

    And wood?

Is this safe at all? I'm trying to remove the engine mount and manual says to take the weight off it, so jack the engine up by placing a piece of wood under the oil pan and jack it up.

How safe is this? Wouldn't the oil pan just bend up?Jacking the car up using the oil pan?
take a chain and a engine hoist.lift it a little.dont do it on the oil pan.it will put a hole in it.then you will need a oil pan and gasket.Jacking the car up using the oil pan?
If you have enough money to buy 200 oil pans, you might want to do this 200 times. Then if you use a kind of sturdy wood, you can even use the hole it could possibly make on the oil pan to make it seem as though you're in King's Island's Boomerang Bay and under the Jackaroo Falls! Then maybe, just maybe, it will all work out - you may not have a working car, but you will at least have experienced the refreshingly delightful jackaroo Falls right in your own garage.

This was my friend's attempt at being funny. My own answer is No, it's not safe and yes your oil pan will bend up badly.
It's perfectly safe as long as you partially lift and remove both motor mounts first. Do not try to jack up the pan while it's still hinged on one side. This will cause bending if a thin metal or actually break an aluminum pan.

When placing the block of wood under the pan be careful to miss the drain plug when lifting with a hydraulic floor jack.

Idealy it's best to lift the motor with a rented engine hoist from the top. Many motors have hooks on the intake maninold or near the bellhousing for this purpose.
Yea if the manual says it its fine. However make sure you use a thick piece of wood (like several layers of plywood) that covers the whole pan. The strength is on the edges. Also make sure the wood is not sitting up on the drain plug. Also make darn sure you do disconnect the engine mount and the engine is moving before cranking on the floor jack.
if the pan is in good shape, it won,t bend it. just take a 2x6 or a board and put on the pan and use a floor jack.i did that many of times.
It is safe. You're not trying to jack up the whole car, just the engine, and only slightly. I use a 1 foot long 2x10 for just this purpose.
not at all. u just use the jack to support the weight of the engine while the engine mount is off. just dont try to lift the car with the oil pan or it will bend.

u can do this but defenatly use a piece of wood large enough to cover most of the oil pan to distribute the weight. The oil pan would prob bot bend but put the wood on as many coners tht you can

if the pan is above a cross member then you have to raise the engine --the crankshaft is in the way. OR the oil pan seal is stuck on ( very likely) and you have to coax it off like slide a thin knife in there and break it free.
If it is above the cross member you will have to jack the motor

up to clear the oil pump.

Is your dipstick tube holding it in place?

Or you might have over looked a bracket of some kind.

The gasket will hold it on pretty good.

Try a large screwdriver tap it in between the pan and the block.

How repair coolant flowing into oil pan toyota pickup?

The other day my pickup all of sudden would not idle and then started overheating. I took it to the shop and they said the motor is gone and must be replaced as coolant is leaking into the oil pan; there are metal flakes in the oil pan and timing belt is loose. The only problem is my truck runs and I can drive it so I am not convinced it needs a new motor. What kind of repair do you think I could get done that would allow me to keep the motor? It now idles OK and runs fairly well. thanks. How repair coolant flowing into oil pan toyota pickup?
Most likely your head gasket is blown, or the head is cracked (or both). Depending on the mileage on the vehicle, you may be a able to get buy with a replacement head gasket (and head if needed) or you may have to rebuild the entire engine.

You could replace the engine with a used one, or a rebuilt one, most likely for less than the cost of rebuilding yours! How repair coolant flowing into oil pan toyota pickup?
On some Toyota engines the timing chain tensioner goes bad and the chain will start making a noise as it wears through the engine, then you will get coolant in the oil. I have seen 3 of these.
i own a repair shop,,and i think the block is busted or cracked on it,,that's probably how the water is getting in the oil pan it could just be a head,,but its usually not when its this bad,,you can have it tore down and looked at if you want to,,it might just be the head on it,,but its going to still cost a lot to repair it either way,,and there's a good chance it wont hold up,after its been repaired, and all that money will be gone for good,,id think it over before i did anything ,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.PS a good second choice would be to find a good used engine for it,,that might be cheaper all around.
    Head gasket.
you have a cracked head or a severly blown head gasket, if their is metalflakes in the oil, you need an entire rebuild of the engine, you may be able to drive it for awhile, but it's going to start smoking and eventually lock up.
    definitely head gasket.

    Not very hard at all....

    Remove.....

the oil dipstick and its pipe.

    the splashguard under the engine.

Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.

Release the oil cooler from the sump. Hang up at the rear. Remove the screw from the bracket for the fuel line.

    Removing the oil sump

Slacken off all screws holding the oil sump.

Remove all screw except for four. It is recommended that the four screws in the corners of the sump are left in place.

Carefully tap the sump with a rubber mallet until the joint and its liquid gasket releases.

    Remove the four remaining screws.

    Remove the sump.

    Cleaning

Clean the gasket surfaces on the oil sump and cylinder block. Use a razor blade or a gasket scraper and gasket solvent P/N 1161 440.

    Installing the oil pan

Apply liquid gasket 1161 059鈥? to the sump. Use roller 951 1205.

    Install

    new O-rings.

the oil sump. Secure it loosely with a few screws.

    the remaining screws loosely.

Press the sump against the transmission. Tighten the screws (1), (2), (3) and (4) to 3 Nm . First tighten the screws (5) to 25 Nm . Then tighten to 48 Nm .

Tighten all screws in the sump joint to 17 Nm . Start at the transmission and continue forwards in pairs.

Install the screw for the bracket for the fuel line.

Connect the oil cooler to the sump. Use new O-rings.

Reinstall the pipe on the sub-frame.

    Install

    a new oil filter.

the oil plug with a new gasket.

the oil dipstick and its pipe. Use a new O-ring.

Note! Check that the O-ring is correctly positioned.

Fill with engine oil. Run the engine to operating temperature.

Check for oil leaks from the oil sump or oil cooler.

Install the splashguard under the engine.

Check the oil level. Top up if requiredHow much trouble to replace s70 volvo oil pan 1998 sedan 5 cyl mine grabed a stone?
They aren't hard to do as long as you get something to scrape off the gasket from the bottom of the engine block, and make sure you have a good clean surface to mate the new oil pan to.

Tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern. Loosely the first pass. Then do a second pass to tighten the bolts to torque specs.
Check the price for the pan first before getting to excited to do this job.Secondly yes guru is dead on with his step by step instructions but if your not doing this on a lift and your doing it on the ground your in for a boatload of fun.On the lift its a very simple procedure on the ground yeah welll lets just say dont have the kids around while your doing it.
better left to the dealer or volvo specialist. special gasket liquid is required cause it doesnt use an actual gasket---see volvo guru's answer for part #. the o-rings are kinda tough to keep in place and if they are pinched or not in right it'll leak. you should use the engine lift to raise the engine a little also. the gasket material is anabolic and is rolled on like paint with a roller.

    good luck !!

How do you make bio diesel out of chip pan oil or coconuts?

How do you make bio diesel out of chip pan oil or coconuts? How do you make bio diesel out of chip pan oil or coconuts?
i donnu but try searching these sites,,,

    www.about.com

    www.ask.com

good luckHow do you make bio diesel out of chip pan oil or coconuts?
with respect to the previous answer bio diesel is not the same as diesel obtained from crude oil sources. Diesel is a high boiling point fraction recovered from crude oil and contains paraffinic as well as aliphatic molecules. Bio diesel in contrast is obtained from methanol or ethanol esterification of triglycerides from bio sources (including vegetable oil and coconuts). Bio diesel has therefore no paraffinic molecules and is much more homogenous than regular diesel. The physical properties of the two are different as well, bio diesel has a higher flash point, a higher melting point and has the tendency to dissolve fuel deposits in systems that have been running on regular diesel.

There are several steps involved in production of bio diesel. The main step involved heating the oil first with methanol and caustic soda followed by several separation and purification steps. Please look at my references for more details.
cooking oil is ok to use straight from the bottle, say about every 20 litres add 10% or 2 litres of diesel fuel.
Biodeisel produced from soybeans is essentially the same as that which is distilled from crude oil. It has carbon chains from 10 to 14 carbons and a cetane rating. There are conversion vehicles which can run on used oil from a restaurant with few changes. Coconut oil burns, it could be used for a fuel, but is not that plentiful.
    The easy route:

You can filter the oil (if it's used), then heat it (to get rid of the water), then you can mix it with kerosene (makes it easier to burn) - 30% kerosene, 70% oil. You can burn this directly in your diesel engine. Some engines work better if you start and end on regular diesel (running for a couple of minutes before switching over to your biodiesel). If you're feeling adventurous you can run the with used oil outright (no dilution with kerosene), but you'll definitely need to start and stop under regular diesel (second tank), and it will probably work better with an old fashioned diesel engine.

    The difficult route:

Esterification using ethanol/methanol and sodium hydroxide. The sodium hydroxide is quite cheap to buy, but the problem is that ethanol/methanol is quite expensive (although you might get away with methylated spirits) and would probably offset any economic gains. This fuel can be used as a substitute for regular diesel.

  • What happens when you accidentally put more oil on your oil pan of your car?

You can create excessive oil pressure, blow out gaskets and seals, and lots of other bad stuff too up to and including ruining your engine if you continue to run it like that. Our oil pan got stripped when we got an oil change and so we got a heli-coil put in but it's still leaking a bit. What's the best way to seal it? MIghty puddy, silicon...? How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?
depending on how bad its leaking you may have to try and use another gasket on the plug and if that doesn't work rtv sealant may work on it for a while, but i think you,ll wind up changing it,they do make a larger plug that will thread its self and stop them from leaking, but you have to be careful when using those ,you get one shot at it when your doing it and if it doesn't work you usually have to get another oil pan, good luck with it.How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?
your welcome, good luck with it ,those can be really hard to repair. Report Abuse

Back to your original issue. Who ever changed the oil and stripped out the drain plug should have comprehensive insurance. I never in a thousand years would allow someone to install a heli-coil in the oil pan when it was still on the car. All it takes is one chip of steel to ruin an oil pump or get pumped through the oil system.

All you can do now is purchase a new factory drain plug. The threads do not seal the oil, its the tapered gasket under the hex flange. Some oil pan drain plugs have sealed O rings. Go to some local auto parts store or the dealer of your car and find the best drain plug with a gasket sealer at the top.
A liquid gasket, or a new drain plug.

you can probably change it in the car if you have an engine hoist and take the motor mounts loose and raise the engine some.I have a 71 chevy 283, is it possible to change the oil pan gasket without pulling the engine?
you normally don't have to pull the engine to change a oil pan gasket , but if the oil tube is deep in the pan, the easiest way is to put the car on ramps remove a motor mount bolt and jack up the engine on the side you removed the bolt from just high enough to get the pan out, replace the gasket, replace the pan, let down the motor, put the bolt back in the mount, tighten the bolt add oil (proper ammount) and ride
To my knowledge you dont have to pull the engine. I have a '63 Chevy Longbed with a stock 283.
You don't have to put the engine, you might need to get some steering components out of the way if the space is too tight tho

depending on how bad its leaking you may have to try and use another gasket on the plug and if that doesn't work rtv sealant may work on it for a while, but i think you,ll wind up changing it,they do make a larger plug that will thread its self and stop them from leaking, but you have to be careful when using those ,you get one shot at it when your doing it and if it doesn't work you usually have to get another oil pan, good luck with it.How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?
your welcome, good luck with it ,those can be really hard to repair.

I have a 71 chevy 283, is it possible to change the oil pan gasket without pulling the engine?

you normally don't have to pull the engine to change a oil pan gasket , but if the oil tube is deep in the pan, the easiest way is to put the car on ramps remove a motor mount bolt and jack up the engine on the side you removed the bolt from just high enough to get the pan out, replace the gasket, replace the pan, let down the motor, put the bolt back in the mount, tighten the bolt add oil (proper ammount) and rideI have a 71 chevy 283, is it possible to change the oil pan gasket without pulling the engine?
You don't have to put the engine, you might need to get some steering components out of the way if the space is too tight thoI have a 71 chevy 283, is it possible to change the oil pan gasket without pulling the engine?
To my knowledge you dont have to pull the engine. I have a '63 Chevy Longbed with a stock 283.
All you have to do is put the vehicle on ramps or a lift, and you can get to the oil pan from under the vehicle.
you can probably change it in the car if you have an engine hoist and take the motor mounts loose and raise the engine some.

On a 1990 3.0 liter Mazda 626 or Ford Probe, how do you remove the oil pan?

I've already removed the battery, radiator, starter, exhaust pipe(s), and 2 brackets that covered some of the oil pan bolts. I also removed the bolts attaching the Transaxel bell housing to the Engine, because it looks like a flashing (or plate?) between the 2 seems to prevent the oil pan from being removed. Yes you can braze it...however, for a more reliable fix electric weld is preferred and there are special rods just for cast metal. In electric welding of cast iron the trick is preheating. Can a cast iron diesel engine oil pan with a crack be brazed with oxy/acetylene?
Cast iron can be welded, but don't attempt it unless you are an experienced welder as it is very difficult. You can make the problem worse.

Depending on where the crack is, you may be able to fix it with ';JB WELD';. This stuff is very good, however you will have to make sure that the surface is super free of oil before using.
yes or there are other weld-free that you can buy that work real well. I've used them Volvo truck airtanks in the past.

You only need to remove the exhaust pipes under the pan. Then the pan will come right out. For more detailed info need engine size 2.0 or 2.5? good luck.
    Can't be done.
What engine? Is it the 2.0L 4-cyl. or the 2.5L V6? On the V6 you don't need to lift the engine. You just need to remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Once removed, access is fairly easy.

When you have oil leaks under your car, how can you tell if its from the oil pan gasket or the engine manifold

I have 3 gaskets - valve cover gasket, engine manifold gasket and oil pan gasket. I get constant oil spots wherever I stop. How does one know which gasket is leaking? Could it be from something else other than an engine gasket? (92 Cadillac 5.7 liter motor)When you have oil leaks under your car, how can you tell if its from the oil pan gasket or the engine manifold
when you get your oil changed ask the guy to check it for youWhen you have oil leaks under your car, how can you tell if its from the oil pan gasket or the engine manifold
Technicians will have the engine steamcleaned and add a UV dye in the engine oil run the engine a while and with a black light and goggles look for the first signs of glowing leak. Crude method plug the hole for the PCV valve in the valve cover with a used spark plug pinch off or use another spark plug close the crankcase vent to the air filter. Do not drive just idle and soon crankcase pressure will build up and really blow the oil out. Be ready to shut it off quickly once you see a leak. High mile engines build pressure quickly because rings are not sealing well.
I would clean the engine well under the manifold for starters. That way you can visually look to see if any new oil is coming down the side of the bloclk

from the valve covers. Keep in mind that some valve covers will leak down the front and rear of the engine, so clean there also if you can. It is pretty inexpensive to change valve covers. If the first suggestion doesn't work for you, change the valve cover gaskets and see if you are still leaking, hope this helps.
More than likely it's the valve cover gaskets. Just to make sure degrease your engine so you can see where it originates from.
Put several sheets of newspaper under your vehicle in the area of the leaks, try from the windshield forward and let it sit overnight. The next day when you move the vehicle you should be able to approximate the location of the leaks. To be sure have the engine compartment steam cleaned and then you will see the exact location of the leaks.
You'll have to get under the car to see which place it's coming from... On my car, when it was leaking from the valve cover gasket, it was visible when I opened the hood. But I've also had a car that was leaking from the oil pan.. I've had alot of leaking cars huh? good luck...
could be front, or rear seal, your best bet is to jack it up and look underneath... Look at your oil pan gasket check and see if it is dry on the block above it ... if its not your problem is on the upper end.. also look at the front behind the balancer and check for leaks...this would be the front main seal leaking, then check the rear, for oil around the bell housing for drips... this would be the rear main seal...also check oil filter and make sure it tight..another way to find out which end its leaking from, set a piece of cardboard under the engine completely across to see which end you drip is coming from

    your welcome. Report Abuse

If it has a rubber oil pan gasket, you can loosen the pan bolts and drop it down some. The timing cover has a lip on the inside that holds the front pan seal in place! But if you loosen the oil pan bolts, you should be able to re-install the timing cover without wrecking the seal and then having a oil leak! Take your time, it can be done!!
you don't have to; but your engine is not going to like the crud that falls into the oil pan, and shortly there after you will be rebuild the engine from the ground up.......
No that would be the bottom. Your timing belt replacement is considered top end work.

I have always used a brillo or steel wool pad. If it is really burnt in there, you may want to also use a heavy duty degreaser, but open a window first, or you might get a little loopy.
Just had to do this last night--and it's the best solution I have found for years. Use hot, soapy water; a good detergent like Dawn to break up the grease. Soak a few minutes %26amp; then use a Chore Boy golden fleece scouring cloth and elbow grease! The beauty of the golden fleece is that it is a specilly treated terry cloth that can be washed in your washing machine %26amp; it does not rust as the metal scrubbers do.
soak the pan in baking soda it will lift the food and oil off the pan.
You should check the label of this product, but if I'm not mistaken, Bartender's Friend would be

good to use in cleaning stainless. It is sold in all good grocery stores.
I have always had good luck with sos pads
Soak them in vinegar. It loosens the stuff and it's easier to scrub off.

There are also commercial cleaners and stuff but if you don't have any this will work. Soak for 10 minutes or so.
I have heard that soaking over night - fill it with hot water and a bounce (dryer) sheet.

It depends. Did you shut it down immediately, or did you keep the engine running for a few minutes after all the oil drained out? If you tried to drive it without oil, you may be looking at a new engine.I hit a speed bump today and broke my oil pan on a 2000 audi A4 How much will it cost to repair?
It will cost more than 200 for labor. You are looking at between 500 and 1000 bucks here. Real sorry for your troubles. You might try welding up a guard plate and bolting it on in front of the pan so this doesn't happen again. Best of luck.

I would go to a parts store, (O'Reilly's, AutoZone, etc.), and get a repair manual for that year and type of vehicle, (Chilton, Haynes, etc.).

They are fairly cheap and if you are planning on doing several repairs over the course of ownership of the vehicle, they are worth it. It very well could pay for itself the first time you use it vs. what you would pay an automotive technician/mechanic to do the same job.

If you sell the vehicle to another individual later on you could even toss the manual in with the vehicle.

If you yank the distributor, you can lift the motor until it hits the firewall, mounts disconnected of course. This may give you enough room to get it out. Make sure it's not the rear man seal first though. That would mean that the motor does have to come out.Do I have to pull the motor out of my car if I'm changing the oil pan?
I doubt if you will have to pull it out completely but you will have to undo both motor mounts and raise the motor up enough to get the pan off.
you don,t have to. just loose the motor mounts and jack the motor up so the pan will clear the crank and oil pump.
If there are no cross members or strengthening bars under the

My main seal is leaking or its my oil pan... In any event - DO those stop leak products work?

Please advise on what kind works best? ThanksMy main seal is leaking or its my oil pan... In any event - DO those stop leak products work?
short answer is no. they just make eveything worse by plugging up the oil gallery. My main seal is leaking or its my oil pan... In any event - DO those stop leak products work?
First and the easiest is to re-torque the bolts on the oil pan and check the torque on the valve cover gaskets or valley cover. If that doesn't stop it and it looks like the oil pan replace the oil pan gasket and check the main seal. Now if the car is 100 thousand plus or the manufacture has a history of bad main seals, then replace it. I would go to a few places that will give you a FREE estimate and see which advice you agree with. ASK FOR A FREE ESTIMATE!! Do not let them take it apart then give you the estimate. Up on the rack they should be able to see where the leak is from.
Any temporary fix is just that, temporary. Stop leak products work by ';swelling'; a dried out gasket. They will only work until the gasket itself deteriorates. You are better off in the long run by replacing the gasket and/or seals and be done with it.
not on something like that it dont, theres alot of pressure on those seals and it will blow the sealer right out. best thing to do is drop the oil pan and change the seal and oil pan gasket.
    NO! NO! NO!

Your wasteing your time and money on stop leaks.

They might work just long enough to sell the car and then the leak comes back.

    Been there done that.
I would not put that stuff in my engine oil it is very bad for your engine . Save up get the repair done right.
DO THE RIGHT THING FIRST AND IT WILL NOT BOTHER DOWN THE ROAD. IM SURE YOUR TIME IS VALUABLE!
sometimes mostly not i would replace gasket and seals and not wast money on stop leak

What is the recommended torque for oil pan bolts on 1979 mg midget?

Make sure you have a clean flat surface on the oil pan mating surface and the engine surface. 10-12 lbs should be MORE than enough. It isn't the tightness that seals the oil, it's the gasket. Use nothing bigger than a 3/8'; socket drive and stop tightening just when you start to feel your arm muscles tense. Do NOT drive the socket home or you'll have a leak for sure. Less is more.

I prefer to coat the gasket with a light coating of white grease or wheel bearing grease---DON'T use silicone gasket sealer because if you gop it up and the engine oil pump picks up a piece of it, your engine is toast! What is the recommended torque for oil pan bolts on 1979 mg midget?

If you pull the front axle out of the truck you can get right to it.Propping up the engine is a pain, and in most cases it won't go up far enough to get the pan out, without pulling the distributor and the fan shroud. The front axle shafts come out relatively easy and there's only 4 bolts holding the rest of the assembly in. It takes some squirming to get it out but IT WILL COME OUT. . Good luck. How do you change an oil pan on a 1993 chevy silverado 4x4?? Is there a trick?
I think that the only way to do this one is the raise the engine assembly up a few inches. If you take the front motor mount bolts out and then raise the motor with a engine hoist you should be able to get the pan off but make sure you check for clearance before you drop the pan.

Don't waste your money on a chrome pan, they leak easily. Auto Zone has brand new pans for around $80.What all oil pans will fit a 1979 old style chevy v8 passenger side dipstick... 267 ci...80-85 sbc v8?
Go to any well-equipped auto parts store, and you can get a china-spec chrome oil pan and gasket for cheap in their performance parts section that will fit your app. Most of the stock chevy small block performance pans these stores carry fit.

I wouldn't even bother getting a junker pan - you're risking leaks and having to clean decades of gum out of the bottom before you use it.
You can use any pass side dipstick oil pan. From any SBC like 305, or 350

My sons 1995 hyundai elantra has a hole in the oil pan.Is it difficult to change and is it expensive.?

I was alsdo wondering if ther is a easier way to fix it other than changing the pan.My sons 1995 hyundai elantra has a hole in the oil pan.Is it difficult to change and is it expensive.?
I used JB Weld to fix the hole in my 1989 Grand Prix. I just drained the oil, sanded and cleaned the spot on the oil pan, and applied the putty and waited 24 hours, re-filled with oil, and it was good as new.My sons 1995 hyundai elantra has a hole in the oil pan.Is it difficult to change and is it expensive.?
have it taken off and welded.

When I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?

When I have too many items to pan-fry in the pan at once, I fry in batches. However, the oil and pan get too dirty and the latter batches come out blackened. Is there a way to avoid this without having to change out the oil completely and clean the pan between batches? When I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?
Just don't let the little crumbly bits that stick to the pan burn. If you have the time, let the pan cool a little and get them out with a paper towel. As long as you don't have any burnt food in the pan, the rest of the food shouldn't burn.

Also, it depends on what type of oil you are using. Olive oil has a very low smoking point and must be changed each time (that's why you should never season cast iron with olive oil). Vegetable oil and Canola oil have higher smoking points so you can reuse them more often, but they aren't as aromatic or flavorful as olive oil. I think that peanut oil has one of the highest smoking points. So if you really have to fry a lot, choose peanut oil. Otherwise, stick to veg or canola oil and you should be able to fry repeatedly. When I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?
you can strain it through cheesecloth but it shouldn't be used after a second frying....also heating the oil above 400 degrees should be avoided
Line a strainer with a coffee filter and strain the grease.
no. you need to change the oil in between.
Look, the easiest to do is just between batches....turn on the hot water...get it really hot....rinse the pan...do not scrub or wipe...and start new. It is as simple as that. I do that to keep my stuff from looking black too. Especially pancakes, pork chops...etc... It doesn't matter what you use to cook with...oil or butter or crisco. works just the same...saves time and it keeps your pan hot and seasoned for the nect batch. Good Luck
You could scoop out the crumbly stuff that settles at the bottom. That might help.

How many bolts do I need to take off to get the oil pan off on a 2001 Malibu?

If you have them all out and it won't come off whack it with a rubber mallet. They are usually stuck on.I have had to pry them off but you want to be careful you don't damage the sealing surface on the block. If you have to pry it off make sure to pry between the pan and the gasket, not the gasket and the block. And be gentle. How many bolts do I need to take off to get the oil pan off on a 2001 Malibu?
all of them that are holding it on, plus all the bolts to anything that is in the way of getting it off....How many bolts do I need to take off to get the oil pan off on a 2001 Malibu?

Is it worth buying a used car that previously had a cracked oil pan? Its been fixed but what about later on?

The car has only 76K on it. I want to make sure I'm not buying a car that I have to keep putting money in to.Is it worth buying a used car that previously had a cracked oil pan? Its been fixed but what about later on?
A cracked oil pan is usually from hitting a bump or object. If it didn't effect the piston rods, it's of no consequence. 76K is not very much on modern cars. Have the compression checked; look at the exhaust to see if it is burning oil, or if it looks like steam, has a head gasket leak. It may be a good idea to have a mechanic give it a safety check. Is it worth buying a used car that previously had a cracked oil pan? Its been fixed but what about later on?
Consumer Reports indicates the 2002 Beetle has above average reliability. For some reason the 2001 and 2003 did not fare as well. For a 7 year old car, that's not a lot of miles. Good luck with your new car. Report Abuse

Could be a bit of a lucky dip.

If the oil pan cracked and lost most of its oil it could have definately done some damage to the engine internals.

Some engine damage isnt always evident but may lead to accelerated engine wear in the future.

Definately get it inspected by a reputable mechanic, its such a small price to pay, otherwise let it go, theres heaps of cars out there you can afford to be picky.
Cracked oil pan? I have never heard of that happening to an oil pan on any vehicle I am aware of but I am sure that might happen if the vehicle has a cast aluminum oil pan. I wouldn't bet a ham sandwich that it won't happen again if it has a cast aluminum pan but if the vehicle had a cast aluminum oil pan and they replaced it with a stock stamped steel oil pan then I wouldn't worry about it ever cracking.

*Edit note: If the vehicle does have a cast aluminum pan then it might be wise to have a trusted mechanic check to see if the mounting bolts are evenly torqued so that the pan is not unevenly stressed and have him see if maybe it is possible to mount a steel skid plate under the pan to protect it from impact with anything you might run over, ice chunks and such or anything you might bottom out on.
A cracked pan is not a big deal. I usually replace them but I have welded them when a replacement pan couldn't be found. What could be a problem is the condition of the engine if it was ran without oil after the pan was ';cracked';. Usually what happens is someone drives over something that punctures the pan, then they only realize theres a problem when the oil light comes on. Depends how long it went without oil before it was shut down. You might want to have a mechanic look at it before you buy it if it sounds strange in any way. Look up mobile mechanics in your phone book or on craigslist. I charge $75 for a local call out to inspect a car on site. Most all mobile mechanics will do it for you for around the same price.
got a bmw with a hairl line crack in the sump, repairs easy, that was two years ago,no leak, alloy welded

Is the an oil pan on a gas golf cart and does it have a bolt?

no.The block serves as the oil reservoir. Club Car has a Kawasaki engine similar to a brigs and straton

Why am I getting a lot of gas in my oil pan. I have a Dodge Dakota, 2.5L, Multi-port fuel inject.?

I'm also getting alot of pinging when I give it full throttle. And have alot of hard carbin buildup. The engine has had gas additives put in excessivily. Almost every fillup. Why am I getting a lot of gas in my oil pan. I have a Dodge Dakota, 2.5L, Multi-port fuel inject.?
check or replace fuel pressure regulator, controls how much gas is going into motor, has your gas mileage gotten worse? Why am I getting a lot of gas in my oil pan. I have a Dodge Dakota, 2.5L, Multi-port fuel inject.?
the intake might be bad and the injectors are pumping gas into the oil, or the computer is bad.
you have a bad fuel injector. its not dirty its broken and the addative wont fix that. I advise replacing the set of injectors if you are going to repair it. theres nothing more agrivating than to replace a part and have to replace another one 2 weeks later.

What are the rods under the oil pan that look like they form a rectangle called?95 accord?

Do you mean under the engine, or do you mean when you take off the oil pan and look at the bottom the the engine?

If you mean when you have the oil pan off and are looking at the bottom of the engine, it might be the block girdle.

Can you take a picture? What are the rods under the oil pan that look like they form a rectangle called?95 accord?

Where is the oil pan located on Toyota Tundra 2003?

Is it near the front just below the oil filter. There is a similar looking drain plug near the center of the body I think may be the transmission plugWhere is the oil pan located on Toyota Tundra 2003?
    bottom of engine.

What type of oil pan do I need?

I have a 64 Chevy II SS. What oil pan should I use for a 67 power steering setup? Can I use a factory one or should I have one made? What type of oil pan do I need?
Moroso and Milodon make deep sump forward oil pans for your Nova. They will miss the power steering set-up with no problem. It's to your advantage to use an extended oil pump pick-up so that you'll be able to take advantage of the pans added oil capacity.

As you already know the sump is in front of the pan instead of the rear to miss the front cross member. What type of oil pan do I need?
the only answer that i can give you is to call a napa auto parts store and they should be more optional on answering your question
    you'll be fine doing that
factory is fine ar have one made with a deep sump to hold more oil in case of a spirited engine

  • How do you replace an oil pan gasket on a 1994 Ford F150 with a 501 engine?

I'm assuming you are referring to the 5.0L V8. Like yugie says, raise the engine up, until the pan will clear the transmission. You will need to remove the oil pickup with the pan. You do not need to remove the transmisson or the engine like you would on the diesel equipped trucks. I know, that rubber pan gasket is pretty cheesy isn't? You might as well replace the pan as well. They are known to rust out.How do you replace an oil pan gasket on a 1994 Ford F150 with a 501 engine?
Go to Jiffy Lube and have them do it.How do you replace an oil pan gasket on a 1994 Ford F150 with a 501 engine?
More than likely it is done just like the F150s with 302 engines. You take an engine mount loose or two mounts, and raise up the engine until the pan will clear the front crossmember.
    Very carefully!!!!!
