Can one weld a hairline crack in an oil pan?

vw passat 1.9 dti, year 00 has hairline crack in oil pan,can same be welded.

leaks oil from same,or do I need a replacment. Crack is at bottom of

pan.Can one weld a hairline crack in an oil pan?
Yes it can if it is clean enough. But it would have to be removed to clean and weld it. So why not spend the extra money to get a new one so as not to have to worry about the weld failing? Can one weld a hairline crack in an oil pan?
If its a steel pan then anything is possible why not

but alternatively you could go to a breakers yard and get a replacement that wont leak regardless....
REPLACE IT! or have some body tow it so you could blame them.
Sure you can weld it, but don't try doing that unless you remove the pan from the car and if you are going to go to all that trouble, why not replace it?
you can if tis steel but you need to remove it to weld it and if you gonna do that you might as well put a new one on ...REPEAT YOU CANNOT WELD WHILE IT IS ATTACHED TO THE ENGINE!!!
Unless you know someone that can weld aluminum and will do it reasonable ($$$) it would probably be cheaper to buy a new one or one from an auto graveyard. It will have to be removed from the car and cleaned. Then the welder should know how to prep it for repair. I have welded a couple, for some friends now, with no problems. Good luck.

(32 years welding)
you need to find out why it is cracked, most vw pans now are alloy so can't be welded, you don't want to do the new one up and find that it cracks because of a warped crankcase
just as easy to replace since you cant weld it while on car and if your take it off you have pass the hard part
The new one from GSF is only about 20 or 30 pounds... Welding could distort your sump, bending it out of shape and making it useless while you make the repair!
The crack will propagate.

Replace it.
It's certainly possible, but it would be simpler and cheaper in the long run to pick up a replacement from a breakers. Your sump has probably been thumped at some point and more cracks might develope. I'd only tackle a repair if it was impossible to obtain a replacement.
JB Weld?
hi there yes the sump can be welded steel is the cheapest to have done its a bit dearer if it is alloy which it probably is but either way the sump must be removed.it may work out cheaper to replace item with new or second hand.good luck with it
If it is steel it can be welded. You should drill a small hole at each end of the crack first as this will stop it recurring. If it is alloy, replacement would be advisable.

Do i have to remove the oil pan when i am going to replace the timing gasket?

i have a 1997 5.7litters camaro and i wanted to know if i have to take the oil pan out when i am going to replace the timing gasket..Do i have to remove the oil pan when i am going to replace the timing gasket?
I know on the earlier small block Chevrolet cars you could remove the timing chain cover without removing the oil pan. I haven't done a timing chain cover on a 1997.

However, I reviewed it in AllData and they were pretty adamant about the need to remove the oil pan when removing the timing chain cover. Since I haven't done one of these before, I can't say if it is absolutely necessary.

In any case, it looks like you have your work cut out for you.

How do i fix a leaky oil pan?

i scraped the bottom of my car, i believe the oil pan, and it is leaking, not steadily , but adequetly, how do i repair it????? it is a 1992 cadillac sedan deville! How do i fix a leaky oil pan?
You probably dented or cracked the pan itself. One way would be remove and repair that particular pan. Another way would be ro replace the pan with a new or used pan.

Have you identified exactly where the leak is coming form? It could also just be a bad gasket that ended its life when the pan was 'scraped'. Good luckHow do i fix a leaky oil pan?
Like the others said, you will probably have to replace it, but first things first: find the leak. You may be able to get away with just replacing the gasket. Most cars leak a little oil, just add more if it is only a small amount, and you dont mind the oil spots where you park. Keep an eye on the oil levels and remember its better to leak it than to burn it.
OK, the first thing you need to do is take off the oil pan and make sure it is not bent at any point. If it is then you need to buy a new oil pan. If not, then it is your oil pan gasket. If you have checked both then at the last resort I would go to the dealer and ask them.
Take it off and braze it.
clean it real good and sand it down to the bare metal and use some jb weld.that will fix it.i used some on a tranny once and it didnt leak.i had that car for 11 years.
If you damaged the oil pan you will have to remove it and have it brazed or get another one from the junk yard
you can either by a new oil pan or get some JB WELD at your local welding shops. 1 scotch both tires.2 jack it up.3 get under it take your oil pan off .4get a cloth and rub it clean find out were its leaking .5 get the JB WELD mix them together real good get small flat object and spread it over the whole let it dry for about 3 hrs or put it in front of a fan for about 2hrs.
better to replace it
I would go the jb weld route but a little diferent. You can get jb weld at auto supplies and hardware store, good stuff for a lot of repairs. I would jack up the front or drive up on some car ramps, drain the oil and leave the drain plug out till the leak stops. It must be a clean surface, no oil, to apply the patch. It may take several hours to drain. when it is dry use some emery cloth or sand paper to clean and rough up the area. Be absolutely sure the oil is not seeping or the patch won't stick. Follow mixing directionsand apply patch. Have a little patience and you will save the big job of removing and bigger job replacing the oil pan. Block your car up, don't go under with only a jack holding it. Ramps are the best.
If the pan is not too badly dented and only a small hole , any competent muffler shop could figure out how to weld it closed. It should not be very difficult or expensive. Don't let anyone convince you that it will blow up, this is not a closed vessel.

Hello everyone, I was wondering how do you get an oil pan off of an 98 Olds mobile intrraige with a 3.8. motor? How do you get an oil pan off of a 98 oldsmobile intraige with a 3.8 motor?
GM was awesome in putting things in the way of their oil pans, transmission pans etc. Most likely you will have to lift the motor off of the mounts to get the pan out.How do you get an oil pan off of a 98 oldsmobile intraige with a 3.8 motor?
some engines require lifting up of the engine to do this and some do not,

your car I would guess not..

from underneath, Look up and around the oil pan to see about 20 to 25 bolts that need to be removed to remove the oil pan, they are small, maybe 3/8ths of 1/2 inch size bolts

How do you change the oil on a 1999 mercedes suv and where is the oil pan located?

where is the drain plug locatedHow do you change the oil on a 1999 mercedes suv and where is the oil pan located?
Your current knowledge of cars could be very dangerous in this case! Do not change your own oil, because, if you do something wrong like tightening the drain plug too tight, you could strip out the threads and end up having to buy a new oil pan (very expensive) or not tightening it enough, and having it fall out and destroy the engine. Over tightening or under tightening the oil filter could cause a major oil leak and also destroy your engine. As well as, sometimes when removing the old filter, the old gasket sticks and when you put on the new filter it will have two gaskets.... causing a major leak.

Unless you have someone who will help you out the first time, I recommend that you take it to a garage. How do you change the oil on a 1999 mercedes suv and where is the oil pan located?
If you have not done before then I would recommend that you have it done for you because it is not a simple task plus it is very messy and you need to make sure that you install the oil filter element correctly.

The plug is located at the bottom and the oil filter element is located at the top.
u don't know where the oil pan is????? wow, sorry but that's extremely sad, good luck, i don't know about an suv, id try your local dealer or the person u got the suv from.

How to change 2001 Accord oil Pan?

My 2001 Honda Accord has recently been leaking oil and it coming from the oil pan. Can anyone help me on how to open it and replace the gasket or to tell me what i should do. ThanksHow to change 2001 Accord oil Pan?
Pretty straight forward. Get it up in the air, get everything out of the way, take the bolts out, and drop the pan. Make sure you use a name-brand or a Honda seal set.Go easy on the RTV if it calls for it-too much will push out and possibly cause a problem with the oil pump pickup screen. How to change 2001 Accord oil Pan?
just like the previous answer, just take it apart. Its not too complicated. If you need help, there is always repair manuals that will walk you through step-by-step. They are and most auto stores or online. autozone.com i know has some. You can also check Honda's website for addition info on ow to do it and what type of stuff you should use. However, ur car is only 8-9 yrs old and u shouldn't have this problem. It could just be something small like a loose bolt or just over-spill from whoever put the oil in. Hopefully its nothing more serious like a rear main seal or something like that. When you take the pan off, check to see if everything is tight and make sure the oil is coming from where the pan meets the engine block. if everything is tight and that IS where the oil is coming from, the replacing the gasket should fix the problem. If not, work your way up and see if you can find the leak. Also, if you have more than 75,000 miles, I recommend using some type of ';high mileage'; oil. This help keep the seal and everything from breaking down. Good luck!!
first drain the oil in a clean pan if you plan on reusing it, there may be a cross-member or exaust pipe in your way, you have to remove those, just remove all the bolts that are holding up the pan, bring the pan straight down because there is an oil pump screen that the pan can get hung up on, after removing the pan, scrape off all the old gasket material making sure you have a smooth dry surface put your new gasket onto, you can use gasket glue to hold the gasket on, make sure you clean the surface on the bottom of the engine too. when you put the bolts back in , make sure you tighten them back and forth, don't tighten any of them until you have all of your bolts started, and don't over tighten them cause this can make it leak, hope this helps, it should'nt be too hard to do if you have some mechanical knowhow. good luck!

Are there any good places to have my oil pan in my Firebird cleaned out?

What makes you think the oil pan needs to be cleaned out? If the oil pan has sludge buildup, so does the rest of the engine. There are some additives that say they will break down sludge, but I wouldn't use them. If the sludge doesn't dissolve completely, it can clog your oil pump and ruin your engine. If you must clean it, drain your oil, drop the oil pan and remove the valve covers. Clean it now by hand, and don't leave any sludge to clog the pump. Are there any good places to have my oil pan in my Firebird cleaned out?
That's the job of the detergent in your oil. If you went 20,000 miles without changing it, cleaning the pan isn't going to save you.Are there any good places to have my oil pan in my Firebird cleaned out?

you mean seals? And its not easy. I believe you have to pull out the engine on these for easy access. A job might run 1500 or so..parts are fairly reasonable but the labor is what kills. Its one of those 100 dollars in parts and a 1000.00 in labor type deals.

the oil filter is on the drivers side but i think you have to remove the tire to get to it, and you will need a cup tupe oil filter wrench to change it. a cup type is just what i mean it fits on to the flutes the inditations on the end. locate the filter and buy a new filter at your autoparts store and buy a filter wrench that fits the new filter, you will probably need a long 3/8 extenision with it. as far as the drain plug, it should be at the lowest point of your oil pan. i hope this helps

The engine is on the passenger side of the vehicle so the longer pan under the engine is the oil pan.

Remove that bolt to drain oil.

The oil filter is right in front of the engine and can easily be seen from underneath..moreso towards the passenger side front.Where do u find the oil filter and the oil pan bolt on a 1995 dodge caravan?
I will be honest,it would be better to take it to jiffy lube, or another service center, it will cost you more for the tools than the oil change will cost,

My Grand Cherokee's transmission oil pan will not keep a seal, any ideas on what can I do?

I have the 42 RE transmission, I think that it is a clogged vent or something, I have already put on a new pan, new gaskets, and have tried almost every transmission oil additive that would supposedly be a magic fix it. Any ideas on the vent or what else could be wrong? My Grand Cherokee's transmission oil pan will not keep a seal, any ideas on what can I do?
I think the vent theory isn't going to get you far. Silicone shouldn't be needed with a gasket. It is possible (seen it a lot) that you have a tiny crack in the actual transmission case, near the pan. These cracks can be hard to see %26amp; find, and I have seen plenty of seasoned techs chase their tails over problems like yours! You might look for an inexpensive leak detection kit; it comes with dye and a UV light, to see where it's leaking from.My Grand Cherokee's transmission oil pan will not keep a seal, any ideas on what can I do?
Short of dropping the pan again, there's nothing you can do.

    No ';magic bullet';.

Next time you drop the pan, take the time to fix the bolt holes in the pan.

Over tightening bolts tends to put dimples in the pan, and the remaining sealing surfaces can't make good contact with the botom of the tranny.

Use a block of wood and ball peen hammer to fix all the warped bolt holes in the pan.

Then, when tightening the bolts after reinstalling the pan, DON'T over tighten them.

They should be pretty snug, NOT tight.
Have you replaced the rear seal of the crank? You should have done this when the pan was dropped. It's a two piece round seal that normally wears 140k+ especially in jeeps. Seal needs to be oiled before install. Then reinstall the pan with clean/oil free surface on the bottom of block. I think you have to drop the front suspension to change seals on Cherokees.
before you put the seal in are you oiling up the seal lip first? if you don,t oil the seal then you will have a dry start up and it will tear up the seal. or are you getting the seal in straight?
Check with NPR '; Car Talk'; those two gentleman no everything about cars. Hope this helps.
try using a caulking compound on the outside to seal it......NEVER put anything inside a tranny except tranny fluid.
silicone .. drop the pan ... put silicone around it .. and slap it back on .... jeep sux .. ive owned a few .

Cheapest way to fix cracked oil pan?

I have a 2003 VW Jetta and found out that my oil pan is cracked beyond repair. Need to get a new one.. wondering if there were any online stores that had the part discounted (the dealer quoted me $226 for the oil pan %26amp; another $30 for the gasket) and how much I should be paying to get this put in (I don't want to get scammed). I live in VT if that helps w/ labor rates.Cheapest way to fix cracked oil pan?
wow, mynephew just did this to his Jetta. I found a pan on e-bay for 50 and it was a cinch to put in. Not more than 30 minutes. (provided nothing else ws damaged) He was worried his engine fried from oil starvation and hated to put in a bunch of money to see if it still ran. It was fine. Shouldn't be more than 100 labor from any individual shop. Dealership will screw you for everything they can. Your lookin at a good thousand dollars from them in all. They aim to screw ya and laugh all the way to the next multimillion dollar expansion. P.S. reused gasket, just added sealant around it. it's kind of a hard material.Cheapest way to fix cracked oil pan?
Getting a good second one would be good, but getting it welded would also be fine they would also use silicone for a gasket so that 30dollar saving. Regards marty engine reconditioner.
JB Weld is the best. Just be sure the repair area is clean of dirt and oil before applying.
jb weld its like 5 bucks at the auto parts store.
    buy a new one
you can use JB weld but to do it right the pan still needs to come off and cleaned real good and the JB weld needs to sit about 12 hrs. before you put oil back in the car, If it were my car I would just get a new oil pan or one from the junkyard or you could even have the old pan welded while you have it off.
    Tiger Hair
my old man is a mechanic and he has used epoxy on minor repairs for that kind of stuff for years..................its about 6.00 A tube at autozone or if you need to replace the oil pan your local junk yard would be your cheapest route
Try salvage yards in your area, find someone that will do it for labor only.

Is it better to replace or try to weld a cracked oil pan on a 97 Vtec Civic?

I heard it is hard to seal everything up when replacing. Has anyone done this. I bought good RSV sealant. Is there a big chance that it will leak where the gasket is?Is it better to replace or try to weld a cracked oil pan on a 97 Vtec Civic?
If it were me I would just buy a new pan or get one at the junkyard, you will have as much invested trying to fix the old one and then still the posibility of it leaking again down the road. When you put the pan on just use enough sealant to hold the gasket in place and don't overtighten the bolts you can always tighten them a little more later if you see oil leaking. Is it better to replace or try to weld a cracked oil pan on a 97 Vtec Civic?
A ';good'; welder can handle this with no problem. You have to drill a hole at either end of the crack to keep it from spreading. Then you need to very carefully v notch the crack with a dremmel or other small easy to handle grinder. Then weld it shut. Keep in mind that the prpe work for welding is as important as the weld itself. As far as sealant,.............................les鈥?is more,.................I only ever used sealant in a VERY thin layer,.....usually kust to hold the gasket from sliding out of place,........................also,. DO NOT over tighten the bolts as it will squish the gasket and it will leak like crazy. Good Luck. Thank You, Rob in PA.

Is it an easy repair to change the lower oil pan on a 96 bmw 7 series? How long does it take to do?

From my experience working on German cars, this should be pretty easy to do. I put a pan on a VW Jetta and it took all of 10 minutes once the oil was drained out. German cars are very well thought out and the maintenance is normally very simple to complete. If you've ever done any work on cars before it shouldn't be hard.Is it an easy repair to change the lower oil pan on a 96 bmw 7 series? How long does it take to do?
It depends. If you have a fairly well equipped shop, and at least average knowledge about things automotive, it's easy enough. As to how long, how fast are you?

I just replaced my oil pan gasket and rear main seal. Should I use the old engine oil to clean the engine out?

I replaced the seals, but there is a minimal amount of debris left over from the old oil pan gasket (I did my best the get most of it out - there is very very little left). Should I run the old oil I drained (has ~2500 miles in it) temporarily to clean things out just in case? OR should I just not worry about it and fill it with fresh oil?

ThanksI just replaced my oil pan gasket and rear main seal. Should I use the old engine oil to clean the engine out?
If you fear that you disturbed some crap and left it in the pan and your old oil is clean, it would be OK to do that. The main component here is the oil filter. Run the car a few miles and replace the filter. The oil is really secondary as a precaution against debris. The oil will function as a vehicle to carry any dirt to the filter where the filter will remove it from the oil.

FYI, when you had the pan off, there was really no reason not to put it back squeaky clean.

    IMHO, of course.

scrape it wipe it whatever it takes to get it clean.

If you dont have a solvent tank to clean parts, you can get a can of carburator cleaner - or brake cleaner - be carefull it comes out with a high pressure blast, let the part soak for a couple minutes and rincse clean.

I guarantee it will look like new.How do you clean out a plastic oil pan after you do an oil change? Do you just wipe with paper towels?
Hi, I just use a solvent such as brake and clutch cleaner or some sort of spirit. It doesn't really need a thorough clean if you are going to use it again its just it will smell if it will be stored indoors if not squeaky clean!
i turn mine upside down over a jug to drain it then leave it but sure you can wipe it out with anything paper towel or a old rag... ive never clean mine before its been dirty for like ten yrs
put some gas in the pan and use an old brush to clean it out and then dry it out with paper towels or an old rag.
if your talking about the drain pan then all i do is wipe it out with a rag.

How to Repair My Cracked Oil Pan?

It's a 2004 Volkswagen GTI 1.8 Turbo An I bottomed out on some train tracks now i have a crack about 3/4 of an inch long. What Can I us e to fix it? I was thinking about JB Weld or some type of apoxy. How to Repair My Cracked Oil Pan?
Temporary Repairs will not hold for long such as JB weld. You will need to remove the oil pan and have it welded or just have it replaced. It is only a 2 hour job to remove and replace the oil pan. A new Oil pan sells for around $175.00 US. If it is only cracked in a small area, get it welded. If it is all beat up, replace it.How to Repair My Cracked Oil Pan?
Ive used a liquid metal product like jb weld to repair a sump before but only as a temporary repair. If its just a crack and you dont want to take the sump off, find someone who can braze.Youll have to drain the sump, brazing is good for cracks as capillery action will draw the braze in sealing the crack, permanently.
it can be welded whether it be aluminum or steel or replaced ,i have welded a lot of pans up though and never had any problem's from any of them, its better if you have the option though to replace it,jb weld is a temporary repair in most cases,i wouldn't trust it as permanent repair, good luck.
I would recommend replacement as it is a longer lasting and safer way to go.

but if you insist I would go with Water Weld or J-B Stik as they are putty-type epoxy. regular J-B is better suited for bonding pieces together, like a fitting to a pipe.
ive used jb weld before on a tranny pan and it worked, but you have to drain the oil and sand it down good so it will stick, let it sit for about 2 hours, before filling it back up. i had that car for 11 yrs and it still was on there when i sold it.
JB weld is only to get you home. The pans expand and contract too much for that to hold. They don't cost much. The problem is that some of them are a bear to get off.
They are not repaired. the are replaced.

They are not expensive. If your ';repair'; job was to fail, you would leak oil and have VERY EXPENSIVE engine damage.

    Good Luck....
    REPLACE !!

I am looking to replace the oil pan gasket on my 2000 Dodge Intrepid, (2.7) and would like the torque specs and bolt tightening pattern for the pan. Any help would be appreciatedOil pan torque specs for a 2000 Dodge Intrepid?
Most oil pans run around 15 to 20 ft lbs. Best bet however is to buy a repair manual at your local parts store.Oil pan torque specs for a 2000 Dodge Intrepid?
book says 14-18 pounds no more than that ,and re-check them after it has been ran,it don't take much to blow the gasket out the side of the pan though,so i always tighten all them up evenly, its better to be a little loose than to over tighten those, good luck on it.

How much for oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket?

I have a 1986, low miles, Nissan Sentra which is badly leaking oil. I was told the oil pan gasket and the valve cover gasket needed replacing and given an estimate of $320. Is this unreasonable.

Any help in appreciatedHow much for oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket?
That sounds in the ballpark for that type of repair. Labor is the killer here. Of course you could save bucks by raising the engine from the frame and replacing it yourself. But then you'd have to spend on the heavy equipmment. How much for oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket?
you could go to a car parts dealer like Oriley's or Auto zone to check them out to do it yourself or have some one do it for you but if you get a mechanic to do it that is where it is going to get expensive. do some shopping around since you know what the problem is and find the lowest shop and then see if other shops will beat it or match it.
it all depend on where you buy them an what kind, but before you do,, try tighting the bolt up,,, in most cases ,as the motor get hot the cool , the bolt will back off,
It's high. Getting the pan off is a real bear, but with a proper garage and lift, the job could be done in two hours. Half that price would be fair. The parts are very cheap.
The gaskets are not that expensive but the labor to install them is, the valve cover gasket is not too bad but dropping the oil pan is at least a couple hours of labor.

Why is antifreeze in my oil pan?

I have a 97 Ford F150 and it has sat for about 16 months. It is time to get it back out so I changed the oil and found antifreeze in the pan. Before I charge this up and start it could this be nothing or ultimately bad? What to do?Why is antifreeze in my oil pan?
Sounds like a leaky head gasket or cracked head. Remove and inspect your spark plugs. If you find one that is really gooped up then the coolent is leaking into that cylinder. With the spark plugs removed roll the engine over (preferably by hand ) and see if coolent comes out of any the cylinders.Don't charge it up and attemp to start it until you make certain that your cylinders are clear of coolent that may be accumulated there. You can also pressurize the cooling system and see if any coolent leaks into the cylinders. Why is antifreeze in my oil pan?
There could be a couple of things i would check. First thing would be is the Head gasket Dry and cracked , and that is letting water in the Oil passage. or the last time you drove it did it overheat and crack the head.
either you were drunk the last time you put coolant in or your head gasket is blown.
its not good, you could have a crack in the block.

Our 98 Ford Windstar's oil pan is rusted out and is leaking. How much work is it to replace the oil pan?

This is a simple fix. Drain the oil of course. Take off the old pan. Clean the surface of the engine where the old pan connected at. It has to be completely clean. This is important so that the new pan doesnt leak. You can probably find a oil pan for your make and model at a local junk yard for no more than 20 bucks. Make sure you clean the the surface of it as well. Get a gasket kit from your local parts store and some RTV to seal it with. The rest is self explanitary. Good Luck. Our 98 Ford Windstar's oil pan is rusted out and is leaking. How much work is it to replace the oil pan?
if you're mechanically inclined it's a couple hours of work. Our 98 Ford Windstar's oil pan is rusted out and is leaking. How much work is it to replace the oil pan?
Very easy job. Drop the oil and remove the old pan. Apply a new gasket to the new pan and reinstall and torque the bolts correctly. Add new oil.

  • Should I change the oil pan on my Volvo 850t myself or take it in?

I checked the oil in my Volvo this morning and found that it was packed with sludge, almost like there was dirt in it, we just bought a few months back. My question is how difficult is it to pop the pan to clean it out.? Should I try and do it at home and save some pennies or take it in, if I were to take it in how much would I be looking at to get it fixed???Should I change the oil pan on my Volvo 850t myself or take it in?
if you have the tools and the floor jacks needed to jack up the engine do it yourself.Should I change the oil pan on my Volvo 850t myself or take it in?
well first you should jack the thing up and look and see if it can be done easy or not ... some cars is no problem but then some you have to jack up the motor.....doesnt hurt to look and see if you can remove it first... most cases i say nope not a easy thing.. and you say a few months ago man a oil change and a tuneup would or should have been done right atfer you got it.. and really you should have seen it when you check the car before you got it.. man if i go to buy a car and i check the oil and its low i leave if its dirty i leave show me they didnt care for their car.. jack it up carwl under it have a look and see if you can do it.... first then if you have a problem getting it out then put the screws back in fill it with oil and try again later with a shop.. dont hurt to try
    What is the car worth?

If the car is really cheap (like few grands) then try it yourself. Otherwise take it to the dealer and get it completely cleaned out. Sludge will KILL you car.

But ask the dealer how they will clean it. Some will do a very skimpy job. Other will completely take the engine apart (good).

    ==

Don't just use engine FLUSH. That is actually WORSE now because you can dislodge sludge and make it move around - and possibly block oil flow elsewhere.

    Good Luck...
It could be a real pain to do yourself, but of course it can be done. Some motors require you to remove a cross member in order to remove the oil pan. You need to jack it up and explore the situation. If you take it to a shop, it could get expensive. I would try to do it myself first.

How do you replace a new oil pan?

on a 1991 honda civic hatchback. 1.5 liter engine.

I heard you have to lift the engine i sure hope not...

anybody have any tips??How do you replace a new oil pan?
Hi, You'll notice the exhaust headpipe/flexpipe runs under the oil pan. Spray it with a good penetrating oil (PB Blaster) svereral times with hours in between. ';It'; being the nuts holding the headpipe to the exhaust manifold and the same holding the headpipe to the catalytic converter. They're rusty and tight..use a 1/2 in. breaker bar and you might need a cheater (pipe), Good luck..GeoHow do you replace a new oil pan?
If you feel like a dirty bit o' cheatin' you are probably replacing the oil pan because the drain plug threads are stripped. Hondas must have some soft metal there, because I always torque the bolt with a torque wrench and still my daughter's '93 Accord threads stripped around the 200K mile mark. Many auto parts chains sell oversize bolts for Hondas; NAPA sells single and double oversize bolts (which is a clue as to how bad the problem is). The standard crush washers no longer fit the bolt but the bolt works fine.
you might not have to lift the engine it just depend how small the engine is if it a normal size u can u blot the oil pan from the engine block but be careful because they is a seal and if u rip the seal if have to get a new seal

but i say that your honda has a 1.5 in it that a small car engine so u might have to lift the engine
Your question leaves me confused ? why would you replace a new oil pan ? HUMMMMM

My 1998 audi a6 2.8 got a small oil leak under the oil pan need help?

can i use some kind of sealer so it wont leak anymore that will work instead of paying alot of money to get it fixed? like bar's engine oil stop leak?My 1998 audi a6 2.8 got a small oil leak under the oil pan need help?
I presume you mean the sump? Assuming its not simply the drain plug washer/gasket then you could possibly repair a split from the outside with a twopack glue, but it would have to be very clean, and that would necessitate draining the sump and possibly jacking up one side of the car so no dirty oil is still dripping from the leak.Good luck!

i dont have money to hire a mechanic and i just need some pointers on how to remove it or some tips to make it easier! How do you replace the oil pan on a 1995 nissan 240sx?
Nissan's are one of the easiest ones to do first get it up in the air or on a pair of jack stands, remove the exhaust pipe if its in the way and then the pan bolts and drop it down, the pan will clear the bottom on most of them if not loosen one engine mount and jack the engine up just a little bit,its been while since i did one of those ,and you,ll need a good repair manual to help with the torque sequence of how to tighten the bolts back down with, other wise it may still leak on you, good luck. How do you replace the oil pan on a 1995 nissan 240sx?

  • I have been reading about repairing a leaking oil pan drain plug with teflon tape.?

My question is how much and where. I figured about 5-6 wraps right after the plug washer but not the whole length of the plug, correct?

Also, another answer explained about a water hose washer, use it between the pan and the drain pan washer?I have been reading about repairing a leaking oil pan drain plug with teflon tape.?
if the plug is stripped out (keeps turning never get tight enough) then new plug kit. If the hole in the oil pan is stripped new oil pan. Now if it just leaks even when tight you could just wrap the threads in teflon tape from the plug washer to the end of the threads. There may have been a small rubber gasket on the plug that feel off or rotted away. Cheap fix would be to get a small piece of cork gasket material and cut it out to the shape and size of the washer. This would be installed between the oil pan and the washer.

All I would say is try it and see whats works for you.I have been reading about repairing a leaking oil pan drain plug with teflon tape.?
Teflon tape might work but not for long. It is the gasket between the bolt head and pan that seals the drain. You can buy just that gasket at an auto parts store. If your drain plug is stripped out, you can get an oversized plug and it will tap new threads for itself as you screw it in.
uh, a new bolt WITH gasket is only a few bucks. fix it right the first time. you can spend more on the teflon tape that the oil is gonna break it down in 3000 miles anyways and leak all over again.
just replace the washer and make shure the threads are good.

if they are not you can get a self taping plug from napa
if the threads aren't stripped buy a new factory plug and gasket

Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?

1998 Toyota V6 with 150,000 miles had the oil light come on. No abnormal engine noises were heard while driving to repair facility. (or ever for that matter) Tests by mechanic concluded that the pump is failing at high temperatures. In the process of taking things apart, the mechanic found ';aluminum and brass particles in the oil pan';.

Since the pan has never been removed before, is there a quantity of particles that would be expected?

Where would the brass particles come from?

    Recommendations?

Background: Car has been reasonably well maintained with routine oil changes at a Toytoa dealership.Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
brass is bad can only come from bearings youre time with this engine is limited best bet is to have new bearings rolled in they can do this with oil pan off it mite give you a few more years good luckMetal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
Send in an oil sample from your engine and the oil analysis results will tell you what's been wearing abnormally, if anything, in your engine. Switching to a full synthetic oil like Mobil One will reduce the engine wear and extend the life of the engine:

    http://www.testoil.com/?referrer=google%26amp;鈥?/a>

    http://www.mobiloil.com
A handfull of small flakes are usually on my magnetic drain plug when I change the oil. The brass is from bearings, which is a bad sign. You have done major damage to your engine. If it still runs then drive keep driving it, but don't ever drive with the oil light on, EVER.
oil pump is a positive displacement gear pump each gear spins on an axis the brass is from the bushings ...metal particles are not normal ...indication of metal to metal wear

my recommendation would be to flush the oil system..use cheap oil run it about a half hour and drain....refill with oil of choice I am assuming that they changed the pump and reinstalled the pan...right?...ask the shop if they use a lab for oil analysis if so ..your next 3 or 4 oil changes a sample should be sent to the lab results will tell you if you have anything else going on in there
metal particles in the oil pan are a big problem.if they move around your bottom end they will chew on everything. the right amount is nearly zero. now if its not too late you can try a magnetic oil drain plug to keep the stuff from circulating, and obviously make sure the oil pump is working.

How does an oil pan gasket ';blow';?

Common problem on the Ford 3.0 V6. How does an oil pan gasket blow? Does it slip out? Have something to do with oil pressure? What exactly happens in this problem that causes excessive leaking? How does an oil pan gasket ';blow';?
It is a common problem in your case. Two causes. One is the most common is caused by the gasket swelling and it blows out the front of the pan.The other cause is a bad pvc valve that cannot remove excessive crankcase pressure.

The gasket is rubber and has steel inserts at the bolt holes so it can't slip or blow out, except at the front. Check figure #30 and #31 in link. The quick repairs I have done is to cut out the swollen part in the front of the pan and fill with rtv. I have done maybe a dozen or so with no comebacks. Some people still (cost not a problem) want a whole new gasket or their pan is rust damaged to do the replacement route. How does an oil pan gasket ';blow';?
Usually, the term ';blow(s) a gasket'; means the gasket went bad.

However, and oil pan (or even a rocker cover) gasket can start leaking if for some reason internal engine pressure gets too high, making the pressure try to find an exit (the weakest point).

Usually this is a high mileage engine, worn rings, combustion blow by, crankcase not ventilating properly.
Stech is right, how ever there is one additional cause.

Many shade tree mechanics over tighten the oil pan gasket. Same thing on autotranmission gaskets on the filter. Even ';skilled'; mechanics do this.

So check to make sure the PCV valve is working, and the hoses to it are not blocked. With these working, the leak may slow down. But if you are not loosing to much oil maybe just live with it.

What does an oil pan do and do I need one?

i was told by my mechanic that it appears that i need to get my oil pan replaced on my civic. What exactly does an oil pan do? Is this a repair I can prolong? What does an oil pan do and do I need one?
the oil pain just holds your engine oil the only time you will ever need to replace it is if you bottomed out your car going over a pot hole or you hit a bump really hard. if your car was leaking oil from the oil pain it self and not the gasket than you would have to replace the pain. If you can look under to car and look at the bottom of the engine that's were the oil pain is on your car it maid of aluminum so you will know right away if it has a crack in it. also your car would be leaking oil all over the place.

Bandit 6 does not know what he is talking about a crank case is not another name for an oil pain a crank case is what all of your engines components mount to. like the pistons connecting rods, crank shaft oil pump your head gets bolted to the block as do all the accessory's.What does an oil pan do and do I need one?
Yes it holds oil, it is not cheap, and is not a ';plug and play'; item!! It is not the pan that costs so much,- but the labor putting it on! my question is what is wrong with pan?? if it is not so banged up that the crank is hitting it, - or has gash so oil leaks, -- or the oil plug seating area so bent up that it can not seal it so it doesn't leak, then you are going to have to replace it -- before you end up somewhere without oil and ruin engine!

If the oil plug is ';stripped out';, there are a number of ';oversize'; and other types of oil plug replacements that you can get so it holds oil at plug!
crawl under the car, look at the engine not the transmission, see the big pan not the small 1 or the only metal bucket down there.thats it. he probably meant new seals and gasket and you probably do need it.see any black drips where you park?ever see all the cars parked in front of a shop? does the business need more turnover?he wants your business. i do to, but i dont wanna do a pan gasket for you and he dont neither.
the real question is why does he say you need to replace it ? Do you hit something and put a hole in it or bend it up to where there is a clearance problem with the internal parts of the engine ? If you answer yes to either part , then you will need to replace the pan .
The oil pan holds the oil for you motor. And yes you need one. The pan should only need replaced if you have a very big dent in it or a hole in it. You may need the gasket replaced if it is leaking. Take it to another shop and get a second opinion before you have the pan replaced.
yes you need 1. that,s where the oil goes to. another word for it is crank case. sometimes you can repair them if they are,nt too bad.

Is it necessary to install a new oil pan gasket if I remove the oil pan even if the gasket in place is new.?

Don't risk using the old gasket once it's been compressed unless you like changing it again when it leaks on you.Is it necessary to install a new oil pan gasket if I remove the oil pan even if the gasket in place is new.?
it is only necessary to change the gasket if you don't mind a leak around the oil pan. It is safer to just replace the gasket since you already have the pan off. It is cheap insurance, as you won't have to leak oil, replace the oil if/when you find the gasket leaked since you didn't replace it in the first time.Is it necessary to install a new oil pan gasket if I remove the oil pan even if the gasket in place is new.?
It needs to be replaced everytime it is removed, unless it s a steel gasket the is rubber coated and designed for reuse. Even then it is advisable to replace it. Most oil pan gaskets are around $20-30. Just replace it.
Has the engine been run with this gasket in place? I would be cautious to reuse a critical part like this. Having to replace it later may be a real pain. Why take the chance? If it a one piece rubber gasket it may be good for a reuse.
You might be okay if the gasket has not been compressed to much. You could try it and replace the gasket if it leaks.
It depends on how much you like that particular job. If you enjoy time under your car, don't replace it. Otherwise, spend the 5 bucks.
if it did,nt tear then reuse it. just wipe it off good and put some ( indian head shellac ) on it. i did it lots of times.
Don't risk an oil leak and have to re do all that work to try and save $6.
yes they are a special compond sealing that are designed to used once only.
always replace gaskets some dont cost much and will save time in the long run

My oil plug is stripped and just keeps spinning in the oil pan. I cant get it out. Any Tips?

I tried pulling it out with vice grips but the dam thing just keeps spinning in the socket. Money is very tight and Im lacking mechanical brains. I just need to get the plug out and put in a self tapping 1. My oil plug is stripped and just keeps spinning in the oil pan. I cant get it out. Any Tips?
that sounds like a bad situation as it sounds like the nut welded inside the pan has come un-welded and won't let the oil plug come out, you are going to have to take the oil pan off and either get a new one or have that one fixed, sorry. My oil plug is stripped and just keeps spinning in the oil pan. I cant get it out. Any Tips?
Since it's already stripped try driving a screwdriver blade between the pan and the shoulders on the plug then try to loosen it.Do it on the side so the blade doesn't hit the body of the drain plug. You might have to try a few times. If the screwdriver doesn't work try a thin chisel.Sometimes you have to put one on each side of the plug.
If this is a steel oil pan, then the welded nut on the inside of the pan has broken loose. Your cheapest bet would be to remove the pan and replace it with one from a wrecking yard in good shape or weld a new nut inside the pan, and replace the plug. Do not tighten the new plug to more than 25-30 ft.lbs. That's what killed it to begin with.
you are going to end up replacing the pan. even if you are able to get the old plug out the pan will be damaged and leak. even a self tapping bolt is only short term fix for a long term problem. i feel for you, look into the price of a pan and save the money up.
Time to get out the drill!

Hold it steady with vice grips and use the biggest drill bit you can because you're going to have to wrestle whatever remains out of the pan.

I'm glad you're doing that job and not me.
daymn your in a tight one aint cha well do what the guy sayd with the screwdriver, if that dont works then you need a new pan cause you need to take it off and you might as well replace it since its off.
I would remove the oil pan, and either drill or cut the plug out. The retap the pan and install a larger plug. You'll need to replace the oil pan gasket before reinstalling the oil pan.
    um don't know

maybe try putting 2 passes of teflon tape over the threads. don't put the tape on backwards. you'll know if you put it on backwards when you screw it in.How can I stop my oil pan plug from leaking by. I have tried different plugs, sealers, and gaskets.?
you need a new oil pan
they probably damaged the thread when screwing it back in by cross threading it, get it checked out, if they have and tape does not work then you could re-thread it and try a larger plug or buy a new pan.
    replace the oil pan

How much, on average, would a garage charge to replace the oil pan of a 1991 Ford F250, 4.9L, automatic, 2WD?

I priced an oil pan and gasket at a couple of my local auto parts stores at a range of anywhere from $125 to $150. A local garage owner tried to say the job would cost me $475.00 with parts and labour. I know labour costs run high in some places in the USA, but not in this area I'm talking about. I also realise this is a messy job most mechanics really wouldn't want to get into if they had the choice, but his quote and the price I found for the parts alone make up a big difference. We're talking almost $350 in labour the way I figure it, unless of course there are more parts needed that I didn't count. Then again, could this guy be trying to hose me? Thanks! How much, on average, would a garage charge to replace the oil pan of a 1991 Ford F250, 4.9L, automatic, 2WD?
I don't know the configuration of the engine in the F250, but it COULD be easy if the pan is accessible: disconnect any possible oil sensors, drain the oil, undo the bolts, clean everything up, install the new pan with the new gasket and appropriate sealant, an hour tops.

On the other hand, if there are chassis members or exhaust pipes running under the engine and bad access to the pan, it could mean undoing a lot of stuff before you even get to the pan.

I'd suggest crawling under and taking a look, and try to guess how much junk needs to be moved to get the pan off. If there's nothing there, he's trying to hose you.

Then call three other mechanics and ask them; or call the Ford dealer and ask for the ';book rate'; for the job. If they all say the same thing it's probably not BS.How much, on average, would a garage charge to replace the oil pan of a 1991 Ford F250, 4.9L, automatic, 2WD?
not enough clearance even with motor jacked up. have to unbolt from trans and lift it a bit.
You'll need the pan, a gasket, an oil filter, and oil. If the engine is fuel injected, the labor time is 4.5 hours. Carbed is 3.3 hours, according to Alldata. Its tight, but this is how you get it out. Unbolt the engine mounts from the frame, jack the engine up, and place 2x4 pieces between the mounts and frame. Let the engine down. Now unbolt the trans mount from the crossmember and jack the trans all the way up to the floor. You should be able to slip the pan out the back. You may have to turn the crank to clear the front throws with the front of the pan. Get a FelPro gasket with what they call Pro Studs. They are barbed plastic guide pins that you thread in to the pan bolt holes, and then will hold up the gasket, pan , and reenforcement bars all at once so you can get the bolts started. Nothing to it.
Not sure what shop rates are in USA but price sounds close to me, if that's including pan %26amp; gasket, oil and oil-filter I say ''throw in a lube job with that price'' and leave it there.

took me 6 hours to do one in my driveway with my friend's 92 Ford F250 without air tools and a hoist.

    What was needed was:

    (1) up to 6 litres / quarts motor oil

    (2) oil filter

    (3) cat litter (to soak up spilled oil)

    (4) gaskets

    (5) gasket sealant

    (6) oil pan (we got a used one from wrecking yard)

    (7) new drain plug w/O-ring
It just the oil pan dude! Just drain it, drop it, put a gasket on it then replace the pain. Simple enough as long as you have a garage. Just buy a Chiltons and see how easy it is, plus they are always good to have.
